not alot of swimming from my black moor (pictures)

You can try feeding them anything except obvious things like hot peppers, etc. Some things, like Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage etc. will make the water smell, so don't feed that.

Try to feed as much veggie material as you can, it will keep the water cleaner. Flake, pellets, etc. are very rich and I wouldn't feed them every day. When you feed flake or pellets, make it veggie and algae based - Spirulina, algae wafers, veggie flake, etc.

Try to feed so that nothing is left behind, that may mean very small meals more often rather than one or two big feedings.

Goldfish are great fish but they can be a lot of trouble, trust me :) You will know when things aren't right, they will start getting frayed fins and be lethargic, they may have a reddish appearance to their fins or gills.

Incidentally, whatever your room temperature is should be fine. My goldfish (black moor) are in an unheated tank and were very frisky and happy in winter, when their tank was 68.

Sometimes a drooping dorsal (along with other clamped fins) can be a sign of an unhappy goldfish due to water parameters, disease, or something else. Platy is right-- goldfish are not as easy as they look. I would only worry if they are sitting on the bottom with lowered dorsals or floating at the top (not swimming at all) with drooping dorsals. You'll know when something is wrong.

I feed my goldies all kinds of fruits and veggies (usually softened in the microwave and cooled.) They love them. They also love duckweed, but it can be a real PIA in your tank. Fortunately mine never lasted more than a week, so I never had the duckweed infestation everyone seems to dread.

ok...so since i last wrote on here ...i noticed the fins looking frayed and like salt looking white spots....i have lifeguard all in one treatment wich treats ich and alot of other things too.......i also changed the filter to a bigger one from a hagen 35 elite to a penguin bio wheel 200 i put the filter mesh from the old filter in the new one so i will keep the beneficial bacteria this tank has been running since november 2010..i had tropicals wich i rehomed because my kids wanted goldfish....ugh....they seem to like the new filter even looks like they are swimming more ....who knows...lol ....maybe im just going crazy.....while i have the meds in there for 5 days i cant do water changes til the sixth day according to the package...so feeding them lightly...what would that be??? I fed them this morning so would i skip tommorow....im going to get the algae wafers......how many would you put in for 3 fish ranging in size form 3 inches....2 inches and 1.5 inches????

Wow, Gouramimommy! I am sorry that you are having so much trouble with the goldfish. You can't go wrong with a Penguin. They are great filters. Make sure that you remove the carbon if you are treating with meds. If I remember correctly, the carbon on Penguins is in a bag, isn't it? Just leave the biowheel and mesh if that is the case.

It sounds like you are, indeed, dealing with ich. There are a number of ways to treat it, the most popular of which is either salt and heat (there are a bunch of posts about that here) or a medication like Rid-Ich. Lifeguard may or may not work. I have never had much success with it, because it kind of treats a bunch of diseases scattershot, but none of them particularly well. The frayed fins will be corrected by maintaining good water quality. Probably a secondary condition from the ich.

I would crumble the algae wafers if you are going that route and feed maybe two to three for those fish if they are the little ones. I would also take out whatever they have not eaten in 10 minutes with a turkey baster, just to keep the water especially clean. It's a lot of trouble, but since you are treating a disease, you want to keep the water as clear as you can.

well if i have to break up the wafers i mine as well use the veggie flakes...lol...thanks now let me ask you this i already treated with the lifeguard...if they still have the spots then should i treat with rid ich...or should i just start using rid ich tommorow????? the other thing its going to sound crazy i know but i wiped down the inside of the tank with plain white paper towels today could that be what im seeing on the fish and not ich????

+1

I believe it to be ich as well. I don't think it is paper towel residue. Maybe not a practice you want to continue, if the towels are shredding :) Since you've treated with the lifeguard, I would see how it does after a course, and if it doesn't work, try something more specific, like Rid-Ich, after a water change.

Ich is also not going to be cured in a single day. It may take 7 days to have all symptoms disappear. Ich has a life cycle which you are trying to stop by using the medications.
