not sure if i'm liking the new format

Yea I am not seeing the dark blue either. I think I like it so far. Takes time to get used to change...
They were at the top, so it didn't crunch everything up and force you to look at them on the side. With the dark blue background, having the side filled with brightly colored ads is obnoxious to the eye.
Whenever there is a change to a site/forum I visit, I always give it one week before making a judgment about it.
One, so the admins have time to work out the most of the bugs (which are inevitable whenever there is a big change to a website/forum)...
...and two, because it always sucks when a site/forum you are used to and know how to navigate through easily, changes.
I use that week to get to know the new system, and usually find that after that week is over, I end up liking the new site/forum better, even if I don't care for it at the beginning of the week.
P.S. I was using a firefox ad blocker. It seems these ads have found their way around it. Well played you rogues, well played.

As for the dark blue background, I agree. It's very hard to see what you're typing.
However, there are 5 options for skins up in "settings" in the upper right corner of the screen. From there, go to "general settings", and scroll down near the bottom. You'll find it. The light version looks great!
