not sure what this is on the catfish

Size and age all depend on tank sizes, not particularly volume.

I was trying to point out the fact that Ive seen what smaller RTC/Jaguar can do to other larger tank mates.

Have kept just about all fish avail to hobby unito few yrs back when I completely got out. Regardless, still have the itch/bug which will NEVER deminish.

Salt Bath seems good as I always kept some salt, quantity depended on fish, with most f/w fish with no implications but less outbreaks. I would not go in detail as most membesr are against it.
Ive used salt as only treatment when receiving boxes of discus shipment from farms.

I personally dont favor Mela/Pima and havnt had them in my fish medicine cabinet but if it seems to do the trick for you, Why not use it?

Hope all goes well!

The size/age relative to the tank size is a total myth that has been proven over and over. Perfect example is the RTC- it'll still grow and grow and bust the 20 long a little kid put it in within 2 months.

The 7'' spotted raphael has been in a 30g tank its entire life. Crowded tank as well. WHILE the 3'' 12 year old has been in a 55g tank its entire life. This guy came from someone that breeds fish all of the time he has a huge fish room so he knows what he's doing. Alot of rare cichlids as well. He thinks it might have been the hard water that might have been the factor but the 7'' has been raised in the same water as well from a different guy. So that totally disapproves that myth as well. As that 55g is bigger n longer in size than a regular 30g tank.

RTC is in a total different category than a jag. Theres no comparision between them even at small size. I've had jaguar catfish at a small size. they're wussies compared to a same sized RTC lol I bet you a RTC will eat a Jaguar same sized given a chance while a Jaguar would try to eat something at least 1/10th of its own size. It hasn't even gone after my minnows which I have in there- the smallest fish in there. They're simply not interested in eating other fish if given a choice between other feeds.

different behavior and family - I used to do salts all of the time myself even with clown loaches. NOW i regret for not doing what I've been doing for years. using salts when I get new fish in. For the melafix and pimafix- I don't use them often but I have the huge bottles around as theres some meds I cannot use on the scaleless catfish and pray that melafix/pimafix combo would do the trick.

Now I'm starting to wonder if there is genetics at play when collected from different parts of the river. One part can have a genetic pool that enables them to get big while the other parts of the tribunary can have genetic pool that enables them to stay small due to water getting so low and being smaller is the key to survival of that species so the genetic makeup has been passed on to stay small?
