nothing but a tank

wow. ok while he was wrong about saying a golfis, betta blah blah blah could live there , you guys did sorta come outa left field guns blazing. ok he has too many fish that get big in one small tank you coulda sent him a PM exsplaining your point of veiw on his tank, instead of trying to embarass him on public forums for the sake of nothing more than picking on him.

and rainstorm most of us me recently included have list farrrrrr to long to put in our signatures.

and most of all that pacu needs to go. it doesnt belong in captivity as it gets 3 feet long + some. chainstores only sell them because noobs buy them thinking they are piranna. they even use the term red bellied pacu because people know the red bellied piranna. come to think of it i think all pacu are red belid so thees no need for the adjective but its all 3rd grade psychology used to make sales. you all need to calm down and quit being so mean to each other over stupid stuff like that.

how it shoulda been handled

"hey man those last few selections dont work. betas are tropical an need heaters same with feeders, and the goldfish require filtration because they produce tons of amonia." + PM "ps: man your tanks gonna look like a sardine can in less than a year. you might want to google your fish and look into a bigger tank"

Rainstorm are you interested in keeping a 1000+ gallon tank in your home within the next few months or so because if not you might want to return that pacu. Just to give you a scope of the size of one of those tanks, the tank will weigh over 4 tons or more than the average SUV.

My last post

I joined this message board because I am new to fish keeping. I thought I could ask questions and get helpful answers from those who are more experienced. As this thread proves, this is not the place for that. While there are a few kind and generous souls here who are willing to help those who make mistakes, there are far too many fish snobs here. Far too many people who are ready to jump down someone's throat because they know more than someone who is asking for help, suggestions, and opinions. I can't imagine why those who are so far advanced in their fishkeeping skills are posting nastily in the newbies forum. Can't you go and argue and belittle those that are on the same level as yourself?

I have had a few helpful answers and suggestions from some caring and kind people. I thank you. Good night and good luck. :OT:

A suggestion rather than a debate

I have seen 'White Clouds' kept successfully in just such a tank as yours. I have a bunch in my garden pond.

They are hardly, quite pretty, like cold water and if you provide hiding places they will even breed - they do not seem to eat their own young like many species. The babies are lovely they look like sperm with hugh emerald eyes!!

Good luck

all i wanted was a simple answer.. and please calm down lol i was just askin because i cant afford a heater, lighting, and a filter *well i can supply them with a box filter :duh:

And what was wrong with me saying that Kill A Watt could put a goldfish, betta, or feeders into his tank? I didn't say to put ALL of those choices in the tank! Just some options.
The problem is that none of those are a viable option. When people ask for suggestions, most of us expect that they are going to get suggestions that may work or are viable.

They also expect to get suggestions or advice that is correct. What is the point of asking for advice or suggestions if the people that are giving all the answers are wrong? Or haven't done the research? Or don't qualify what they are saying by admitting that they really don't know BUT . . . ? What if the rest of us just ignore this thread and he puts a betta in the tank and it dies?

Would we feel responsible? Hell, yah. Would YOU feel responsible? I have no idea. We don't really know you yet.

As for your tank, I'm sure you *will* get a bigger one, but the fact reminds, and to dispute your comment -- no, most people do not get a bigger tank. They come here looking for help for the fish they bought that they should never have purchased in the first place. We are the ones who have to walk them through euthanasia. We are the ones who have to tell them to take the fish back to the LFS. We are the ones who have to read how someone cried when their favorite fish died.

If you or anyone else feels we jump down peoples' throat -- well, I'm sorry, but the reason most of us are here is for the fish. The fish come first. IME misinformation and ignorance causes more fish deaths than fish have been flushed down the john.

I know I've come across as rude of late. Probably because I can only take so much bloody COMET goldfish that's only 1½" because it has been jammed in a 2 gallon goldfish bowl for a over a year, 8" fish in a 10 gallon tank, and so much UNNECESSARY fish deaths and stunting.

None of it is aimed at you, kill_a_watt. I apologize for your thread getting hijacked.

If you can supply SOME filtering and will monitor the water religiously, then white clouds, as someone already suggested, will work fine. They are cold water fishes and schoolers, so six.

Are you going to get a heater and better filter down the road? When you do, then you can expand your tank out and add more fishes. Don't worry about lighting unless you intend on growing plants. Put that last on your list. Filter first, then heater, then lighting.

Good luck,

Roan

i would put a great white shark in that tank. sounds perfect to me. ;-)
P.S. Roan, Don't take no crap from that guy. your right. fish need filtration first, then heat. i mean go to www.drfostersmith.com and buy a filter for 15 bucks and a heater for 10. if not, don't torture any fish you want to throw in there. or go to walmart and buy some plastic fish. then you wouldn't need heat or filters or even food.

white clouds would work with a filter

and yeah the fish are often as seen as more important than the keepers its sad yeah . and sometimes you do have to wade through the "im better than you and you will never be as good as me" post to get to something that matters or has some substance. but most all forums have that virus.

often if you find someone who seems to know what they are talking about and you have a honest question you can shoot them a PM and it keeps you from getting flamed.

but seriously take any advice you get on here and google it. alot of this stuff is people repeating stuff other people have said trying to look smart. problem with this is they often misquote and then it leads a chain of misquotes.

i try to stick to things i have firsthand exsperince with. anything else is hearsay nomatter who said it. sometimes hearsay is fact sometimes its not. but its a gamble none the less.

and no if you kill your fish i am not responsable. i cant go to each and every one of your homes and FORCE you to do the right thing. if you kill your fish its your fault. i can give guiding light but in the end it falls on you.

I'm no expert, and correct me if this is totally out of question. But the species profile on AC said that fany guppies can tolorate temps between 62-75 degrees. They also don't get huge (average of 1 1\2"). Plus they look pretty cool in groups.
