Nub Freshwater Maintenance

I personally prefer sand because its easier to keep clean. I have heard that pool filter sand works, and so does blasting sand. I would stay away from playground sand though, its excessively dirty and can take forever to clean.

Plecos can eat algae, but that shouldn't be all that you feed them. Plecos are good cleaners when young, but they turn into lazy poop machines as they get older lol!

Ok, Now how about going with some plants too? If I get some real plants, what other things am I going to look at having to get? How does pool filter sand hold up to rooting plants? Anything I should mix with it? Would my fish appreciate having real plants as opposed to fake ones? Does it really make a difference? What about tank maintenance with real plants? Any real plants you can suggest that will go well with my tank and that would go well with the fish I've listed? Would you reccomend real plants for newbs?

I'm obviously asking a lot of questions, and I'm hoping I'm not being annoying.

I always think that live plants are better for aquariums. They seem to make the fish happier, plus they help with your water quality, and look better. If you want to start out with something simple, you could go with some java fern. You can attach it to objects and it will attach to said object. Or you could just stick it into the sand. Plus they are easy plants. I'm no plant expert though, so I can't really truly answer your question, hopefully someone will chime in.

If you are getting direct and or indirect sunlight into your tank you are probably not going to be able to eliminate the algae. If you are set on the location of the tank and you don't have a way to block the sunlight then I would go with a naturally planted tank. If you do some searching you should be able to find lots of information about it.

Will just any pet store have those nerite snails? If so, How many do you figure I'll need? And what is the difference between a nerite snail and maybe a Malaysian trumpet snail?

Malasian trumpet snails are pests to put it lightly. They are livebearers and can quickly overrun a tank if you feed too much. They also reproduce asexually. I don't think they are good for anything other than breaking up and burrowing into sand, and eating stuff off of the bottom of your tank. Beware though: once you get them, they are very hard to get rid of.

What do you guys recommend for a good way to clean the foam filter on my fluval?

I put some water from the tank into my sink right now and then pull out the filter and just squeeze it out in the water. I'm seeing a lot of stuff in the thicker foam though and I'm not sure how to go about getting it out.

I used to just spray it with the hose on the kitchen sink but obviously it kills healthy bacteria so I've stopped doing that.

Any suggestions?

I normally just wash mine in a bucket of tank water, just like you would a normal sponge. There will always be gunk though

Ok thanks. I wasn't sure cuz I could still see some blockages in it. Pfs here is $25 a big bag... I'm trying to find it cheaper close to me. And I'm also trying to find a bigger tank cuz the 33 is just not big enough already lol

You will find that no tank is big enough :P you can always find good deals at fish auctions. If you don't have any, Craigslist is always a good option.
