I am presently retablishing my 46gal. mbuna african tank. I lost all of my fish due to a heater malfunction, I.e. I made fish soup...... I have reintroduced six fish and was wondering what would be the most i should add. I have at present a pair of black bar zebras, a pair of ob zebras, a pair of psduchromis ahii and a 4 inch platoctomis. I purchased a heater with an auto shut off to avoid making more soup......Open for sugestions. :cool2:

Well I would say for a 46g thats about all you should get species-wise. However I would suggest adding more of each species so you have 3 or 4 of each. Having "pairs" of these guys is bad since they form a harem and males have been known to over-harass females to breed. Also you dont want just 2 males together.

Im not sure what a "psduchromis ahii " is.... there is no pseudochromis genus... The Pseudotropheus genus doesnt contain a species that is similar to "ahii" except maybe acei. There is a haplochromis Scienochromis ahli... which are actually usually fryeri's.

*Hat tip*

I agree... One male of each species with a handful of girlfriends would be the best situation.

Just out of curiosity, what size heater were you using? Heater malfunctions are more common than one would think. I would recommend that you use two 50 watt heaters in the tank instead of one larger one. That way, when one heater blows its top, your fish will neither cook nor freeze.

I am aware that 2 watts per gallon is less than most people will recommend, but unless you let your house get really cold, it will be more than enough to maintain a 78-80 degree tank.

I just bought a fully submesible, shaterproof, auto shut off, to replace the Wallie wourld special. It is a 200w. The thing is , it was more lack of forsight than malfuction. I didn't turn the heater back down when it warmed up on the east coast this week. Fish soup........

porksoda: the wattage of a heater will provide it with a lot of power if the room temperature suddenly drops, but any heater should shut off when it hits its assigned temperature. If the one you had did not do this, it clearly malfunctioned and you might have a claim if you still have the receipt.

Over the years, I have purchased the most expensive heaters on the market, and the secret is, eventually they all fail. Some, fairly early and for no reason at all that I can see. Get your heaters on-line, buy lots of spares, and you will not be unhappy in the long run.

Good luck though, whatever you decide to do.

I hear ya.....You think if I took the funky heater back to my lfs and told them what happened they will hook me up? I lost at least 150.00 worth of fish. Beat scene for me huh....
