Since the bottle is only .5L you wont generate as much co2 to have any negative effects on the fish. Considering ppl use 2L bottle on 10g without any issues.
What you can do is place the ladder as low in the tank as possible and see how fast the bubbles diffuse, if you are still getting big bubbles by the time they reach the top you can try placing the ladder under the filter overflow, that way any bubbles that reach the surface will be lightly pushed back down by the current.
Since this is only .5L of the mix, it will last you 2 weeks or so (3 weeks tops). This is why in the future I would suggest you add a 2L bottle to the current setup using a T connector to increase how much co2 you get in the tank/how long you get it for..
I would not care much about the activator, stabilizer packets they come with.. Heres a simple mix specifically for the hagen setup:
Stabilizer: 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
Activator: 1/8 teaspoon Active Dry Yeast
Sugar: 1/2 cup sugar
Bottom line, the only reason i would say that this setup is good is
1- almost leak proof (unless you dont close it tightly)
2- easy to use, hangs on back of the tank, out of the way
and mainly
3- The ladder is the highlight of the product.
