Nutrient Rich Sandy Substrate

can go for regular flourite, it might be better than just laterite

Remember you are adding 1" of flourite (any color) + 2-3" of sand. Even if you do have black substrate underneath it wont show with all the sand covering it.
 
Wish I could find the thread on using sand as a substrate for you. Look around there had been a good one. Sand is not nutrient rich and does not retain nutrients well in and of itself. Layering with laterite and flourite seems to be the common rec.
