Never really. Ive seen tank well over 5 years old, with zero problems in the health of plants.....
 
is there a possibility that my nitrates are just going to be at 5ppm already with me not having to add them? and do the sell nitrates at lfs?

Get a nitrate test kit, and check your tap water. If it's above 5 ppm, it just fine and you might not have to add Nitrates.

As for actually buying Nitrates, it's made by Seachem, and called.......

Seachem Flourish Nitrogen
