Hi All,

Getting back into the hobby and can use some help picking out equipment for my 105 gallon tank. Plan to have a FOWLR.

Oceanic 2 sump
Mag 7 pump or should go with Mag 9?
2 powerheads (any recommendations here)?
2 200watt heaters (Jaegers)
Reef master RO/DI from filterguys with pressure booster pump
Salt? what type is best nowadays? Instant ocean?
DSB is what I am leaning towards
200 lbs Live rock (recommendations?)
refractometer (recommendations?)

What websites do folks recommend for best price and service on equipement?

Thanks in advance for your replies
Andrew

oh, also forgot to ask about lighting. What do you think about this 48" coralife compact fluorescent set up?

48" 4x65W Coralife Aqualight CF hood, 2x Actinic and 2x 10,000K, -Straight Pin

Coralife any good or should I get a different brand?
thanks again
Andrew

Hi Andrew and welcome!

I'm still pretty new to this whole SW thing but I've learned a few things and I'm sure others will chime in where I miss. Sounds like you have a nice setup going there.

I would reccommend for your powerheads either 2 Koralia #3's or #4's depending on if you want to go reef or not. A good website where you can find a lot of this stuff is Drs. Foster & Smith:

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/Shop.cfm?N=2004

They have some good Live rock on there as well. A lot of people on here seem to like the Marshall island LR and I'm leaning that way myself. Really depends on what look you want to have.

As far as salt mix Instant Ocean seems to be pretty good and cheap to boot. Like I said, others will chime in here but take a look at the website and around this forum and you will find lots of ideas.

Thanks, I am familiar with Drs Foster and Smith but was hoping for some input on some of the other items I am planning on getting and other websites people are happy with...

Particularly the lighting...

thanks again.

I'd choose the 9 if the sump can handle it. Personally, I went for a quieter Eheim pump.

Love my Koralias. If you're doing FOWLR you can get away with 10x turnover so 2 #3s would be enough. Even still I'd personally go for 2 #4s in that tank. It is only a little more than the #3s.

2 200watt heaters (Jaegers)
Reef master RO/DI from filterguys with pressure booster pump

Instant Ocean is fine for a FOWLR. If you're wanting to change to a reef at some point I'd change the recommendation to Reef Crystals, Oceanic, or another that has added trace minerals.

DSB is what I am leaning towards
200 lbs Live rock (recommendations?)
I'd do a little less rock and get some prime porous pieces such as Marshall Island or the the better deep water Tonga. Lots of places to get rock. I'm a big fan of buying from local reefers as they'll often sell rock for $2-4 a pound.

refractometer (recommendations?)
What websites do folks recommend for best price and service on equipement?
I've had great luck with dry goods from MarineDepot.com and BigAlsOnline.com (great prices on the Koralias).

thanks Grins... appreciate your input. not to go to the well too many times, but what you advise on a lighting system? Again, for the foreseeable future its gonna be a fowlr...

thanks
Andrew

You could probably get away with the Eheim1262. I have the 1260 on my 55 but I have to dial it back.

On the lgihts I'd not fret about it if you're doing FOWLR. Spend your money elsewhere for now and get something servicable.
