I have had my Oceanic Systems 30 gallon hex tank set up for about 2 weeks now with 30 Giant Danios to cycle the tank.

I have a Marineland Magnum 350 below the tank and a Marineland Penguin Bio-Wheel 200 on the back of the tank (not in the pics).

The water got pretty cloudy after the first couple of days, but is crystal clear now and the Danios seem to be doing great.

I would like some stocking suggestions for a community tank as well as an African Cichlid species tank.

I'm not sure how having a tall aquarium plays into my fish selection, but I need to make up my mind to browse the LFS for the best selection of fish with relevance to your advice. Thanks for the help.

I dont have advice, but a newbie question: what will you do with the giant danios? Will your LFS trade them for other fish? I need to cycle a tank, wondering if I should move current fish over, get new fish that I want to put in current tanks eventually, or get very hardy fish and trade them in... Dont mean to hijack your thread!
BTW, the image links in your post arent functioning, at least for me...

Yeah... the links are gone for me too. In addition to my website and everything else that I had hosted. Not sure what happened... everything was there as of 5/6/06. Now everything is gone.

Back to the fish...

My LFS will take them back when I go to purchase my new fish for the tank. Pretty much like renting the fish for a month. The LFS swears by Giant Danios as a means for cycling your tank. They recommend 1 per gallon. I picked up 30 for $25. They have been pretty fun to watch. Really active fish.

It has also given me more time to decide on what I want to put in. Giant Danios are pretty good in several tank types from what I have read.... so I may keep a few.

Ouch... majorly overcrowded. Nice fish tho, just gave me something to think about. :)

Yes it is a crowded tank. I'm not that concerned though since I am taking them all back after I break in the tank. Then I assume they will be off to another fish tank for the same purpose.

The fish seem to be doing great. I don't think that the water chemistry was that great on day 2 of their arrival. Now the fish swim slower and explore every region of the tank.

Back to my reason for the post... anyone have stocking suggestions for my tank regarding cichlids or community.

Fish need horizontal swimming space not vertical like a hexagon offers. If you had a 30gal standard tank there are a lot more possible cichlid/community fish that you could house. The hex has very little because of the shape. Most of the African cichlids wouldn't work in your tank. If you can find them, some of the shell dwelling species would probably be ok. As far as comunity fish some smaller tetras (neons, rummynose, ect) Hatchetfish, corys, maybe some shrimp (ghost, ammano, cherry red). I'm sure there are more options, but that's about all I can think of now.
