i am just curious about what these little string like things are on the bio-foam section of my whisper filter. i suppose they are bacteria, but just want to make sure. thanks

it might be, but i have never seen bacteria look like that. its probably not harmful anyways. thanks
 
def algae dude, when you clean it dont wash your filter media!!!
 
It might be algae but more than likely because of the color it is one of numerous chain-forming bacteria. Check inside your filter where it's nice a dark. If you see strings there it's definitely bacteria.

I've had this happen to my GF tank before when I got a little busy with life... (or a new PS2 game) and didn't clean it on schedule.
 
Yes rinse the pads in used tank water and clean the filter housing in warm tap water.
