Oddball~: ? about your 2.5 snail tank

Why is that?

Wouldn't you need at least a small filter or something to keep water moving? I would be afraid of the water going stale and becoming stagnant. If it's not needed, I'll surely pull the filter out of mine.

It's not needed, trust me.

Snails will go in your filter, believe me. Wait till they get big, get caught in the magnetic thing you're talking about. My 10gallon had a couple snails get stuck in the propeller and it stopped the filter for a couple days and I lost a fish :( Didn't even know I had any snails until this showed up.

Yes, they do get stuck in the impeller and such parts and die, which fouls up the tank even more. In addition to this, the snails I'm talking about seem to be able to breathe air, since I see them venture up there and gasp at the surface. If you get a disposable filter, I believe there is just too much current for them to float around and grasp onto a lettuce leaf.

They also can get sucked right out of their shells in the filter intake, which also kills them.

So if I remove my filter how will I keep the water from fouling? lots of water changes? If I stick a sponge on the end of the intake tube there's no way they could get in the filter because it goes all the way across the top of the tank and is covered totally by the hood. This is the type of tank it is. Or do snails like dirty water (yuck!)? If I went and bought a live plant and stuck it in my 2.5 gal, would I see snails in acouple days, or does it involve a little more than that?

Snails can live in scum. Just leave the water as it is and put some snails in it. Just stick lots of bushy plants in it, too. Place dark lettuce leaf in tank. Remove leaf if uneaten in 4 days, replace leaf if it is eaten. Repeat as needed.

Also, their poop is fertilizers for the plants. Wait one month and you should see baby snails.

Thanks for posting how you set up your snail tank. I was planning on setting one up but thought I needed a filter and such. So I now have set up snails in my 2.5 old goldfish bowl. But some plants along with the snails. Fortunately the manager is more than willing to give me plenty of the pesky snails from their fish tanks to keep our two red-eyed puffers happy.

can i use some Tupperware container as a snail tank.....
