Well I am trying to find some fish that are just plain odd. Example: Kissing Gouramis, and upside-down catfish. I don't want anything that is to hard to find, or really really aggressive, or that requires any extra special treatment. I also don't want them getting very big. I am just looking to acquire some interesting fish for the 40 gallon FW community tank that I am planning on getting soon. Any suggestions?
 
you could try some prawns or cray fish. Google "electric blue lobster" and you'll see something along the lines of what im talking about. You could also try some muscles, shrimps, snails, certain "eels" would be ok, a Peacock eel would be a nice choice.
 
Peacock eel, definitely. Maybe a brown knife fish, they don't get as big as most of their group.
 
loaches any type will be odd. You could get a mix group and have serveral different behaviors from them. Get 5 clown loaches, 5 horseface, some kuli and you would have a cool tank. The clowns will get too big for the tank but it takes a long time for them to get big. You could also get red fin loaches which are a little more aggressive then the clowns. You will also need something that will swim in the middle level of your tank like black ruby barbs.

I actually had been thinking about blind cave fish. In the species profiles here on AC it says that peacock eels are aggressive, and I don't want that. I think I will probably get some horse head loaches.

depending on how community you are looking for, butterfly fish are kind of cool...surface dwellers, but they will eat fish small enough to fit in their mouth :eek:
 
Well here is a list of fish that have to go into the tank because they have out grown their current tanks.

1 angelfish
6 zebra danios
1 red tailed shark
1 silver dollar(yes I know they are supposed to be in schools)
1 pictus catfish
3 black tetras
1 hatchetfish(also a schooling fish)
