Odyssea CFS 500 Can-filter review and circumference modification

Its a worldwide issue with these filters .... I'd say the o-ring theory combined with the fact that the taps themselves are fairly cheaply made would be the culprit. Jeabo (the maker of these filters) is a big company and should figure it out but like many Chinese manufacturers they only get a clue when their orders drop off. We would not carry these filters due to the issue despite the easy fix. We simply can't carry a product that requires immediate modification/replacement parts to be installed before reliable operation can be enjoyed. We need products that work "out of the box" and the CFS500 doesn't do that. People who already own these filters are lucky that Gunner has done the homework and figured out the solution IMHO.

I agree it's wrong that we have to fix it ourselves once it comes out of the box, but like you said, we are lucky enough to have Gunner figure out the solution for us. If this o-ring problem really is the only problem then I will still buy the filter nonetheless just because it's so inexpensive

I don't actually believe it but I would not be surprised if they are deliberately using oversize O-rings to limit the life expectancy of the canister to say 1 or 2 years but did not expect these early problems. While that sound crazy its a very common practice in the American automobile industry where some critical parts are specifically engineered to fail for recycling and further sales. Anyway this whole issue for me is moot now. I have these two filters I need for my next 2 projects and Im just impressed as I have ever been with their performance after my modifications which I just wanted to pass on and share, even if I had to get trash thrown at me to get it done. I did my part and now its up to the buyer that wants the best performance for money spent and THIS filter-mod hits it out of the park IMO and as the song say's "you can go with this or you can go with that, but this is where its at, and I think its Fat" :woot:

Do you remember if you had to sign for the package? I emailed topdogsellers but didn't get a reply.

Going to replace my 110gph eheim with this :)

I get a feeling that the whole signing thing with UPS has to do with area crime. When I first moved into this new community UPS had me sign everything. After no reported thefts and 4 years UPS leaves everything on the porch without knocking. I also think when TopDog provides you the tracking number you can contact UPS in advance to have them modify delivery, like pick it up at the delivery dock. Topdogsellers aren't answering questions about this filter for some reason, probubly the Chinese manufacturer is calling the shots, no comment, just sell, IMO.

Personally I think the same Chinese company that makes the CFS500 makes the FX5 and I'm guessing Fluval is not happy about the CFS500 and the oversize Orings are just one of the concessions for a filter that uses some of the exact same parts and overall design.

I've never had to sign for a package I ordered on ebay unless the seller specifically told me I had to, or it was in the auction description or shipping details.

They wouldn't do that it goes against everything the Chinese companies do. I'd say its a production issue, they have thousands of one particular size and they are going to use them up come hell or high water. Thats the kind of thing you do see often with the Chinese Aquarium companies.

OK fine Ill agree that nothing stops the Chinese when it comes to production and profit not even copyright. I remember my tours in Hong Kong you could buy non-copyright literature and music for pennies on the dollar. But lets just pretend for a moment that the same company the makes the CFS500 has a contract with Fluval for the FX5. There would be copy or clone concessions in that contract and rules. I don't think the Chinese would be so stupid as to not know that the CFS500 is muted by not allowing all sides of the sponge surface area to filter like the Magnum 350, Ocean Clear or FX5 and I dont think they are so stupid not to catch the O-ring problem during random production testing. But I do think these could be contract requirements by their largest customer. I just cant see how they could miss such a huge and commonly known design flaw in the filter sponge and overlook such an incredibly debilitating O-ring problem when the canister is a small replica of the FX5 down to sharing parts and color. Its just too large a coincidence IMO and I think that is why you wont find any suppliers willing to talk about this. But remember Im just speculating with a few fun theories.

When I'm wrong about something I have to admit it so let me make correction to one of my privious post a while back about the new green lightweight ribbed replacement hose the factory is now sending out instead of the older thick stiff clear heavy 7/8" hose. The new thin flexible ribbed hose is NOT and I repeat NOT smaller then 3/4 inch as I eyeballed, and in fact placing a measuring tape to the inside diameter it is actually 13/16 inch which is actually 1/16 larger then 3/4 inch. That is what happens sometimes when you trust your eye rather then taking precise measurements. So I will be using the new green ribbed hose with confidence after all. Now if the manufacture can just install the right O-rings and trim 2 inches off the sponge at the factory rapped in blue bond padding for 360 degree filtration, they would have lightning in a bottle.

Excellent read.

I think it would be overkill in my 46 (and you already sold me on a SunSun :) ), but it is good to know for when I convince the wife I need to do that 150. Two of these for less than one FX5 makes the budget happy.
