I posted this on the Planted Tank, but I haven't gotten much info. I have a 3g Eclipse which I'm learning has insufficient light to grow a lot of plants. My java fern and banana plants have grown, but I want more.

I notice that Aquatraders has a new 5g cube tank with a 25w incandescent lamp. Does anyone know if the incandescent bulb can be tossed and easily replaced with a spiral type PC? Would this be a worthwhile upgrade from my Eclipse? Can anyone comment on the rest of the tank and its quality? I know about their other products being somewhat dubious, but I haven't read anything about their new Cube 5.

depends upon the size available in the space where the bulb goes. You could go with a coralife 10 or 20 watt, and those might fit better. Or with the 20 watt Lights of America setup at Wal-Mart.
You have to check if it will actually fit in the space available, though.

I would just go with the Odyssea 10, its about the same price and comes with a 18 watt PC bulb already. Its a bigger tank, which will give you more room to play with.

Ok this may cost more but if you pick up a 5 gallon glass tank and try this light.
its about $30 at thatpetplace.com

Mini Aqualight Double (Freshwater) (ESU)
You Pay: $ 29.99
In Stock: No *

Item Number: ES0870

This item is a sleek and streamlined fixture designed to enhance and complement your freshwater or planted aquariums. The compact and low-profile style incorporates a built-in ballast and is suitable for applications where space is limited. The included lamps generate a full-spectrum, high-intensity output, high in photosynthetically-active energy that provides the essential light requirements for vibrant life and plant growth in freshwater aquariums.

Instructions:
This fixture is for use over a covered aquarium.

Specifications:
Equipped with modern aluminum housing, a highly-polished aluminum reflector, protective acrylic lens cover, on/off switch, and 5 1/2' power cord.

Two 9 watt 6700k lamps are included.

I have tried using those screw in PC bulbs for incadescent hoods and had problems. I prefer using Power Compaq setups better.

What sorts of problems have you had with the screw in PCs? I'm not sure how that fixture is supposed to fasten to a standard 5 or even a 2 1/2 unless it has legs that extend out a fair amount. Even so, that would leave you with dark corners. It's only 9" wide. The Cube5 appealed to me because it seems self-contained. I don't mind having filters hanging off the back or hoods with ballasts attached to the rear on my other tanks, but this sits on my desk and its viewable from all angles.

Most of the time, screw in PC bulbs do not fit the hood in the tank
