OH @*&! I have ICH!

When I've used salt before to treat freshwater fish, I've used "aquarium salt for freshwater fish." I don't know if table salt is acceptable. There might be a difference in the dosage (table salt and aquarium salt have different textures) and whether the table salt is iodized or not.

Hopefully someone else will post with a more definitive answer to your question, but in the meantime, I wouldn't use table salt until someone says it's ok.

Do NOT use table salt - it has something in it (iodine? iodide?) that is no good for the fish. You must use aquarium salt. I haven't bought any in a long time, but it comes in a little carton like a milk carton, and costs I don't know, maybe $3.

Good luck getting rid of the ich!

Sorry Tara but table salt is fine. We have had this discussion many times on the board. The iodine in table salt is not the same as the stuff used to disinfect wounds. In the low concentrations that are present it will cause no harm. The only other additives seem to be silicates to prevent the salt from sticking together. Orion Girl says she has been using table salt for years and I tend to trust her judgement. But if using aquarium salt makes you feel safer than by all means use it. I have some at home as well that I bought when I first started out keeping fish.

TKOS ~ I had no idea that table salt was safe... I always heard that it wasn't... hmmmm, thanks for the tip! :D

I too believed that in the beginning but the lovely people here are good at clearing up the myths. :)

ICH

These two links should answer almost any question about salt or Ich, I have had absolutely no problem with iodized table salt.
The article on ich covers the blanket over the tank issue also.

daveedka, very interesting article! After reading it, it's all coming back to me now! I remember I used Rid Ich, but it didn't work, so I tried the salt/heat method, and the towel over the tank just carried over!

Great links :)

You should add them to the Sticky in the Newbie Forum that will hopefully be filled with great links. Much easier than trying to remember them all.

I'll do that ( when I get organized this weekend), I have a tough time finding them when I want them for the threads. maybe If I put them all in one place at least I'll know where they are. I made the grave mistake of saving a lot of this info as text files, and don't know where I got things from therefore I can't post the links.
