If your 90 gallon is cycled then just put the pleco in there!

I understand you can't afford to keep getting bigger and bigger tanks for it, I understand that. Money doesn't grow on trees.

But think of it, a 90 gallon is MUCH better than a 33 gallon.

On the contrary, if he's been in the 33 gallon for two years, then his growth is probably stunted.
 
go with the logical common sense choice, you have a 90 gallon setup and running, you dont need to buy a bigger tank, you already have it, move the pleco to the 90 gallon. Logical answer, unless you live on Pitcairn Island, most water plants are cheap so I would imagine if the pleco did uproot some, very easy to replace. If you love that fish, think about how crammed he is right now, give him freedom, he begs for it.

bortsamson ... I don't understand you response to the posts Em was given. She asked for "SUGGESTIONS" and we gave some to her. I didn't see anyone yelling at you for caring for your pleco and keeping it in the 33g. It seems everyone just suggested either giving him up or moving him to the much larger 90g.

Hey, it's your fish ... your choice ... if you didn't want to hear those kinds of suggestions then maybe you shouldn't have posted asking about some. Sorry. Hope things work out with your fish.
 
Ems, I think what you're going through now is just a process to help you decide what's best in your situation. I am speaking from recent experience where it took me several weeks to make the decision and then, it turned out it took that long for ME to be comfortable with what I knew to be the best choice in my situation. I didn't have a 90 gal., but I was considering a new tank. I pondered the cost, upkeep and on and on. I can't say if the new tank would have been that big, but I knew that eventually, the pleco was going to outgrow it. I talked to the owner of the LFS and he told me about customers of his that have good size tanks and would be able to house my pleco. Ultimately, the best thing would have been to contact these large tank owners and visit them to see what kind of care they give their tanks. If one of them wanted my pleco, I would have given it free of charge. However, the route turned out to be give him to the LFS to sell to a large tank owner. The LFS owner let me hang out while he transferred and acclimated him to a larger tank for safekeeping until someone wanted to buy him and I went to visit the next day to make sure he was alright (he was just fine). Interestingly, the LFS was the place I bought the pleco from in the first place. He was about 3 inches long at the time and over 12" when I brought him back. He was beautiful, even for a common pleco and I really liked that fish. I had him for 12 years, after all. Bottom line here is, that you will know when you have made your decision, whatever it is, even if it takes a bit of time, it will be what is right for you .. and your plec.
 
i have the impression that from the beginning what EMS and her boyfriend were wondering when she made the thread was if anyone here would take their plec or would know someone who could do it or a place where she could find him a good home... but of course i might have misinterpreted her. so, EMS, i know how you feel about the plec; unfortunately i have neither a big tank to house him, nor know anyone who could do it. Maybe you could find more answers at planetcatfish.com ? or plecofanatics.com ?
the other option would be what some people have already suggested which was getting him a bigger tank, or at least moving him to the 90 gallon tank for a while. i hope i have helped you. Good luck!

I've been thinking, I've got it pretty easy. I've got a bunch of places that have fish tanks that are willing to take them. My friend traded a large plec to a nice chinese restaurant for a free dinner. They have 2 500 gallon tanks, one african and one south american. They said they would trade my big jack for a meal when he gets a little bigger. There are also a few resorts, hotels and even the local hospital have display tanks that are really well kept. I guess not everyone has that option. Have you tried looking for something like this? I know a lot of sushi places have display tanks (isnt that fitting?) just a thought.

What was meant by starting out was that when we purchased it, we were never informed about the size he would reach, and we purchased it when we were just starting out, so our mistake was purchasing it in the first place. Please don't post if you're not going to offer any positive feedback, we're looking for help because we know he needs to be moved to a better location.


Archangel, I completely understand, which was why this post was started in the first place. The tone was misunderstood, just because of the fact that its difficult to understand the tone when you're reading as opposed to listening.

blueturc, unfortunately the 90 gallon is not cycled, its not even completed yet. We've almost purchased everything, and figure we will have it ready in a few weeks. So that is why we are looking to give it away.

Jtd724, as stated above, unfortunately the 90 gallon is not ready for any fish. So no, thats not a logical answer although I wish it was.

petcrazy213, I don't think it was meant to be taken as yelling, the tone of the post he read was misunderstood, thank you for the clarification because yes, I was looking for suggestions :)

pl*co, thank you for the positive feedback, we are going to speak with the lfs this afternoon (a good one we trust) to see if there are any options through them.

chrisinha, you understood, however I should have made myself more clear I suppose. I was looking for suggestions on what I could do and also if anyone wanted him, or knew someone that did, I'd be more than happy to give him away to someone on here. Also, thank you for the suggestions :)

gonefishin, no, I have not looked, but thank you for the suggestion, I will look into these options.

Now, is there anyone else? I appreciate everyone's positive feedback, but please don't attack because of where the fish is living right now, I understand that it is not adequate living conditions, but once again, this is why we posted in the first place. We're just looking for help so we can make the pleco more comfortable and content. Thank you again.

I don't know why anyone would get upset about this. I've had a common pleco in my daughters 2 gallon for almost three years now. And he's fine. :p
