today at the store, I saw a three inch dempsey bullying a tank of red bellied piranhas that were substantially larger... the second they swam away from the corner, he put em back in their place very quickly and not very gently. Little guys got spunk and guts...

I can't say I envied those piranhas.

One thing that you have to remember is that most cichlids are predators. They are usually the top or near the top of the food chain in their natural areas.

Red belly Piranhas are more scavangers than predators. Yes a group of them will hunt down a kill an animal or fish if extrememly hungry but for the most part they will take the easy already dead meal.

Red bellies are also the wimps of the piranha world. Easily the least aggressive. Some of the others like the black, black diamond, Piraya etc... are really aggressive. Those guys mean business and would have qualms about taking on a cichlid or anything else for that matter.

We once had a 2 inch jaguar terrorizing a group of 15 yellow schooling piranhas in a 100 gallon. The cichlid took up 3/4 of the tank the piranhas got the other 1/4. We took the jag out after 3 days. It just wasn't fair.
