OH oh - shrimp problems

honestly my first clown fish died in the 2nd months of tank. in 2 months your parameter isnt staple enough so it could be that too. shrimps are more invariable than fish to water parameter changes. im not sure if small emerald would cause it. but i can tell you this, your adding too much livestock too soon and your system wont get to use it quickly. i'd say wait another month or 2 to add inverts. please state what brand test kits your using cause API isnt accurate at all.

one more thing shrimps are really invariable to nitrates. im not sure how much nitrates they can handle though. this is the reason why more FO/FOWLR cant have shrimps. do you have sump and fuge?

whats your livestock list?

No sump or fuge. I have a canister, 40 lbs. live rock and a skimmer and 2 koralias (#3's). I am not using API (is that the liquid stuff?). I use the ones with the spectratest cube for measuring and mixing the powder. My parameters have been consistent. I am not looking to add more, but to keep what I have. My nitrates have been consistently just below 10 and my ammonia and nitrites remain at zero. I keep it buffered to a ph of 8.3 and the salinity is at .22. Calcium varies between 440-480. I have never measured iron.
Livestock list: 2 clowns and one firefish. 5 snails (turbo and cone) and a small emerald crab. The shrimp....well......

have not used powder before neither i heard of it. your sg is too low, atleast up to 1.024 but to safe side is 1.025. how often do you test your water? cause my water wasnt staple at all in 2nd months of age espically PH.

i hope someone with more experienced can chime in. hope your shrimps makes it. good luck buddy!

I've talked with many people (including on this site) and .22, while not ideal for corals (which I have very few of) is fine. It actually helps to buffer against parasites. I am obsessive right now about the water since it is a new tank. I check every morning and will have to cut back because I feel ridiculous doing it so often!!! I won't cut back on the ph check though because that can change too frequently.
