Hi all,

So I won a bag of xtreme aquatic foods cichlid diet. Protein 38%, fat 5%, fibre 6%. Ok to feed to my demasoni or not? I thought it was too high in protein from what I've read. But is seems a shame to waste it...

I don't know the brand but it depends more on the kind of protein that it contains. Spirulina which makes a good dietary supplement is about 50% Protein, but that's plant protein; meaty/fatty protein is what you have to avoid. Any more specifics on what the ingredients are ?

The first four ingredients are all meaty things. Which is why I haven't fed it to them...

IMHO, a food with a total protein contents of less than 40%, is appropriate for mbunas. I have seen that food brand recently on TFH magazine; it seems to be good.

I always go by the ingredients. Ocean Nutrition's Spirulina Flakes are always good, and fairly inexpensive. Protein is at 48%, but the first listed ingredients are plant meal and spirulina. I would go ahead and feed the flakes you have, but you should also be giving them as many fresh veggies as you can as well.

:iagree:...100%. From Ocean Nutrition I also like the Cichlid Vegi Formula.

xtreme's a great food formula. Use that as part of africans diets.

BTW, ITS NOT THE PROTEIN % CONTENT that you have to worry about. ITS THE KIND OF PROTEINS THE FOOD IS MADE FROM.

Spirulina is a HIGH PROTEIN FOOD

Simply because a food has a low protein count doesnt make it a "perfect" food for mbunas. Mbunas need protein as any other fish does. It's their ability to process certain proteins that makes it less desirable to feed them a meaty diet.

Great point and you are totally correct!:thm:
But if you are not sure what the food has more, veggie proteins or animal proteins, you can use as a safety rule that a food with LESS than 40% of total protein content, can be used for mbunas safely; IMHO.

And as always use these higher proteins in moderation do not strictly feed one high protein brand of food 3x a day will spell disaster a normal feeding for my fish always Intel a few different brands with different % at different times of the week to mix it up so to say..
