Last year I had the idea of keeping tropical fish in my pond....it worked out ok until winter hit and i had to stick them in the garage in a rubber maid container and heat the water.....bad idea...then we went on a weekend trip and came back and all were dead???

My pond is 550 gallons, 2 foot deep and full of plants.

This year I am going to try:

6-7 fancy goldfish
3 or 4 dojo loaches
half dozen white clouds
4 paradise fish
half dozen gold barbs

The pond gets into the upper 40's during the winter and I am going to try to keep the dojo and goldfish in the pond year round. Next winter I will have my 20L to keep the other fish for the coldest part of the year... Any comments or concerns???

The only problem is that the goldfish, dojos and paradise will eventually gobble the white clouds otherwise the stocklist is fine. The gold barbs are tropical species.

Your fancies will not do all that well outside as they are more adapted to warmer constant aquarium temperatures. They are also prone to infections and disease and are poor swimmers. Long finned comets and shubunkins are very beautiful and will do great outside where your at. The water temperature where you live will be pretty much perfect for them.

White Clouds will do alright with the other ones for a while, just supply lots of hiding spots for them and hope they breed. If you want a minnow species Rosy Reds are an option as well.

If you get all male paradise fish they will become aggressive and territorial when mature and attack each other. If you can find a female then you might be able to keep 2 pairs. If you can't find a female 2 males might have enough space to leave each other alone.

I keep my 3 dojos in my fish tank its just Dojo's are escape smart they can escape almost any hole that is not small then there head
well wouldnt your loaches keep coming out of the water and if they do then when they are out under the sun or at night a predator may eat them up.
just mentioning this to you but Dojo's favorite water is cold water

about the paradise fish- I think 4 would be ok if you had 1 male and three females. I was sold a 'pair' that turned out to be two males and they are constantly fighting even though they live in a pond big enough for both of them. I like my fish to be relaxed and chilled out, if they fight it stresses me out as well...

Iwent to china town in San Francisco this sunday and went to the numero uno goldfish store in town. I was talking with the guys and he told me in his homeland (northern china) people keep fancies in ponds all year long. He told me that the water gets down in the mid 50's. He was not worried about having the fish in the pond, but he told me to wait until the water warms up to at least 58F before I put the fish outside because it will be a big shock. He told me that many fancy goldfish varieties were developed with looking down at them in ponds in mind! I got 3 awesome pearlscales, two orandas, one lionhead and one ranchu. Most are quite small, 3 are about 2.5" long. I also got 4 dojo's. They are chillin in my 20 gallon tank waiting for the weather to warm up. The goldfish in this place were high quality and decently priced!

I keep a 100 gallon goldfish barrel. I'm in Southern California, so our temperatures are not too far off. I have mostly common goldfish in my barrel, but I keep two fancy tail goldfish. They do fine through the winter. I do water changes every other week in my barrel as my fish are still small. In the summer the lilies suck up nutrients like crazy. I only change water once a month just to add some trace elements for the plants.
