ok seriously guys tank size question fantails black moors

well

my wife like most other people likes gold fish and likes full looking tanks.
sadly these are conflicting likes grrr.... she will overstock her tank while waiting for the goldies to grow and let her see why i am bugging her to keep such and empty tank.

logic to me dictates.

1 the gold fish will grow and fill up the tank
2 the smaller fish will get eaten if able to be *stupid fancies might not catch them LOL*
3 most small colorful fish live for about 3-4 years
4 most gold fish need 3-4 years to grow up to full size.

logic states that a couple of neon tetras or other small colorful fish will be dead or dying by the time the goldfish will need the rest of the available filtration and room.

with this logic in mind i should be able to talk her into a semi heavy planted tank with cleaner shrimp and a small to med size filler fish and that should work as a temp right?

btw right now the stocking for her 55 is a chocolate fantail, black moor, and a very vibrant gold fantail with incredibly small tail and one very pretty orange yellow kinda plattie *didn't get along with other tank mates in daughters tank and i don't want an orange live bearer in my silver molly tanks.*

the moor and chocolate are in hospital / QT 10 gallon under going anti fungal treatmment. got the moor in the 55 woke up and shoot med sized white fungal spot and moor was scraping body on sand.
got the chocolate from walmart BE-A-YOU-TIE-FUL finnage coloration shape etc. bit too skinny so when it settles in it will get eggy i am sure.
any way figgure since already treating for one type of fungus might as well use same tank To do the QT in.

current amonia level .20 and i am using the filter cartage from a crawdad to seed the new filter for the 55.

You could keep two more goldies in that tank. Just make sure they are fancies, not single tails, make sure you have enough filtration and do weekly water changes.

My planted 125 is what most people consider overstocked, but my fish are healthy and doing fantastic, and my two largest (female and male calico fantails) are about 6 years old and 14" and 13" long, respectively.

As long as they have enough room to swim comfortably, and you keep the tank clean, they should be fine, in my honest opinion.

I agree on no smaller fish. It isn't just about the goldies eating the small fish - the small fish can devil the goldies terribly. I kept rosie reds in with my goldies for awhile, about a dozen of them. One day I was watching the tank and noticed that Mei (my biggest, oldest fish) kept suddenly bursting into motion and flicking her fins irritably. I moved closer and the dang minnows were nipping her fins.

Goldfish just do not mix well with other fish. That is how it is, unfortunately.

I did briefly house rosy barbs (yes, they are coldwater) with my goldies with no issues. But to me it is better to be safe than sorry. My goldfish have ten times the personality than any tropical I have ever had, and are very precious to me. They have a potential 20+ years of life ahead of them, and I don't want them to be stressed, hurt, or uncomfortable in any way. So I keep tropicals with tropicals and goldies with goldies :D
