I'm not really new here I've been moslty just reading around more then posting, so i decided to do my first post...so here goes

I'm pretty sure that this will be a stupid post but none the less it'll get posted. I'm having a huge problem with this brown algae, so my question is this, could it be coming from my filters? here are some pics of what they look like now. And feel free to go to town on this post, I just may deserve it!

Brown algae is very common in newly set-up tanks. If it just rubs off then it is a diatom, just rub it off of everything before you do a water change. Just bear with it for now, it will go away in time. It took mine 4 months to go away.

Yikes! Time for a new filter. No seriously grab the keys, get in the car and start driving. How long has this been going on for? The first thing I would do is take the fliter media out and wash it in some tank water. That and dump the actual filter in to some diluted bleach and start scrubbin'. If it still looks really bad after that I would try and investing in a new filter. You also want to get a paper towel and scrub any algae off the sides of the tank and the ornaments. Then do a water change with a gravel vac to help remove it completely from the water, preferably after it has had a chance to settle on the bottom. The algae may be surviving in your filter and continuing to repopulate in your tank after you clean it from the walls. Did you just recently set up your tank or have low light, because that is what this type of algae is associated with most. Don't feel bad. We all have our off days. You were right for asking for help, no question is stupid. :)

hmmm, very interesting.

brown algae = diatom algae(technincally a tiny animal) it easily scrubs off but it will repopulate quickly.
in new glass tanks it occur due to silicates(in the new glass leaching out) or phophates.

you can scrub it..I had a problem with it in my 10 and 75 (acrylic) in the 75 I had phosphates..I tried a phophate sponge and when the phosphates dropped the algae started dying off. plant will use phosphates..so I added more plants and bumped my CO2 the algae started dying off(white water)
the browen algae seems to be in control again.
I also found that cutting light ime seemed to help.

in my 10 (glass) it has it really bad..reducing light is only having a minor impact it(but it does help) in this tank I added oto's (the diatoms were really bad..they help otocinclus loves the stuff..

I would highly recommend cleaning the filter...it looks better and will run more efficiently.

Wow I didn't even look at the pics. Stupid me! I would clean out that filter really really well. Put the media off to the side in some tank water, get a scrubrush and go to town on that thing. Throw in a snail or some ottos to take care of further outbreaks and you will be good to go.

sweet action! I've read around and alot of people say taht its caused from low light, well I've got two 48 wat 6350K bulbs running from about 9a to 9 or 10p on a timer. But I really hope that its from the filter! I'm bad at cleaning it, but good with cleaing the tank! Thanks again guys
