OK to mix beta w/ goldfish?

the profile is wrong. as Roan said

there is a lot of misinformation about bettas not only on the internet but also in books published about thier care

the difference is surviving a hard, much shotened life, versus being a healthy fish that lives out it's full life span in comfort.

what would be then a long full life for a betta?

there was someone on another forum who kept a betta in a 5g hex tank, filtered and heated, for 8 years.

i keep my two male bettas in a split 10g tank.

Hrm, 7-8 years is very unusual. Wonderful, but not a common occurence.

I'd say, on average, if the betta has a proper tank et al you could go 3 years easy.

Otherwise, 6 months to a year, IF you are lucky.

I had one for 4 years, the first three years he was in an unheated and mostly unflitered 2.5 gallon box.

it was probably a weary life for your betta- i'm sorry- but they are just as healthy or happy as they should be in such a home- 2.5 gallons is bigger than most cold unfiltered betta containers too

He lived a long life, dispite being uncared for. No one knew any better, he got moved to the retirement home for the last year of his life, with warm, filtered water.

i'm sorry but just because he survived that long does not mean that it should be a recomended practice.

are you recomending it? b/c that is what i'm reading

it's like saying my 2" fancy goldfish has lived for 5 years in my 5 gallon tank-

this is not an approriate environment for the goldfish even though it survived.

Of course I'm not recommending it, hense why I said uncared for. Roan estimated an average life of 3 years. I shared my betta's experiance to point out that I think she is underestimating the average life span.
