I may be new to this, but I can tell my fish isn't happy now (the snail either). So yesterday I did my 50% water change in my 1gal tank, and all went great. Good response form the fish and snail, they seemed much happier in the new water.

Well today, my 3 year old discovered the fish food and decided to feed the fish - the whole container! Yes, a whole container of fish food into a 1gal tank! :help: I decided the only thing I could really do was to take the fish out and dump the whole tank, it was just too full of stuff for any other option. So I dumped everything and had to rinse the gravel out as well. I didn't rub anything off as I was trying to disturb things as little as possible. But I had to get all the food out. So I set it back up, filled it with new water (treated the water), and then put them back in.

Ever since I put them back in, the fish and snail are staying right at the top of the water and are staying in the same spot. The fish is not moving from this paticular spot at the back of the tank, like he's hiding. And they both are staying right at the water line at the top. So I know something is wrong here, I think from what I've read it has something to do with oxegyn? What ever is wrong, they haven't been in the tank long (just a few hours), so I might be able to catch it in time to fix it without the guppy or snail being hurt. At least I hope so.

Any help appriciated!

If you have an air pump and air stone, set it up at least for the short term. Does this tank have a filter on it? You might be able to adjust the water level for a little more surface agitation. Did you take any water tests?

I don't have any water test kits, so for the immediate, that isn't an option as for finding what's wrong.

The tank does not have a filter on it, but it does have an air stone (w/pump) and this is already hooked up.

I noticed my snail is finally moving again, and is half way down the tank again. Is this a good sign that maye things are leveling out? Maybe I just stressed out the fish by moving him out of the tank. I'm guessing here, but I think we've had this small tank up and running for about a month now. So he's been in the tank without being moved for about that long. Maybe I shocked him?

We had this happen in a 5 gal molly tank when I was a kid. My mom used the net to get as much of the flake out, then turned the filter off (to keep it from getting clogged), let the tank sit for about 30 minutes to let the flake settle, then did a thorough gravel vacuum to get the majority of the gunk up.

Filter rinsed daily, daily vacs and daily 50% water change until it all cleared.

Only lost the fry (mostly cause they got netted up with the flakes) and 1 adult.

well, as you know about nitrifying bacteria, there's always a HUGE bloom in them right after the tank is set up or super-cleaned, so just wait and it will go back to normal. (at least I think! )

I agree with fishcatch, things will go back to normal with time! and also wishful's experience. Do continue to change 20-30% of tha water dayly and gradually go down to 15-10% not to disturb your mini-cycle

Okay, thanks guys!

the guppy is still not looking really comfotable or healthy in there. But he is starting to move a bit more and is going down a bit further int he tank now. He was also interested in eating this evening. So I think I may just have shocked him by the move and as you guys said I basically messed up the tank's balance in there. So I will wait it out and hopefully they will make it through okay.

Thanks again!
