Old But New

I would have to second the idea of a 20L with an eclipse hood. Should look nice and clean on a desk. I'm pretty much assuming the desk will hold up fine, but you could always try my method. I have an old printer stand that is a perfect fit for a 10g tank. What I did was essentially sat on it for a while (used it as a chair while web surfing LOL) and then jumped up and down on it a bit. Since it never even creaked with my 200+ pounds I figure it could hold a 10g no problem. As for stocking how about a school of harlequin rasporra and 3 or 4 cories?

I appreciate the tank help, I will have to see and wait til after I get back from my spring break vacation....anyway I am clueless as to what types of fish everyone is suggesting that I put in my (future) tank....is there a link to what the different species of fish are (pictures would be nice), and which get a long better with one another...which wont out grow the tank, etc, etc, Thanks again, everyone!!

my favorite way of figuring out what fish to get is to just go to your fish store and make a list of all the fish you think look neat, then go home and research them. my personal favorite setup is a centerpiece fish or 2 (sometimes 3 if the tank is big enough) and a school of smaller fish to fill up the background, and possibly a few bottom dwellers or algae eaters like otos.

I like agressive fish, like sharks and barbs....pirhannas(spell check?).....as well as he angel and guppies, i dont think they get along that well with one another though....

thanks!

What about plants? do i still need a filter even though i have live plants? what about a bottom filter?? you know the one that you put on the bottom of the tank and cover it with rocks??

i read somewhere that you fill a tank with sand then rocks??!?!? I am totally confused...someone PLEASE point to the right thread or direction!!!!!!!

filtration is for two reasons1. remove solid wastes that float around and or lay on bottom(on your substrate which can be sand, gravel ).2.provide biological filtration(a form of moving water across colonies of bacteria). you can provide additional chemical filtration with activated carbon which nutralizes odors, metals etc. i use overthe tank powerfilters and undergravel filters in my tanks and a small sponge filter in a small tank. are you going with potted plants or are you going to plant them in the substrate? some plants like mature water so you may want to plan your plant layout bu tput them in later.

i forgot to coment on if you have plants do you need filters. yes filters help keep your tank clean(less maintenance ) and provide biological filtration. your plants can help breakdown fish wastes since they use that for food but i would recomend using some form of filter. the maintenance of an undergravel filter can interfer with plants keep that in mind.

Just a note here -- none of those fish will really work in a small tank except for the barbs and guppies -- and I hesitate on the barbs because I think they need at least a 30g.

You need to think small community fish. Most aggressive fish get very big or need a lot of space to move. Save the big fish for when you can get a 55 gallon or larger tank.

If you want aggression but a small tank, the shell dwellers I mentioned earlier are a good choice.
