Old Slate bottom tank

I would get it and try to reseal it. Then again, I'd love to have an old metal framed tank, even a tiny one...

I would go for it!

I have a 5 gallon metal frame slate bottom tank and it's fantastic. I resealed mine and it wasn't too hard. I'm not sure if it was even needed the tank is very sturdy. If the 55 is still holding water after all that time then I would think it's in great shape. Reseal it to be safe then set it up. You won't regret it.
One other thing is e sure to measure it. I ran into a problem of finding a hood for mine because it is not a typical aquarium size since it's so old.

Right now the tank has probably... 45 gallons of water in it, gravel, a few decorations, just no fish. Its filled up to where there is water about an inch below the metal frame. I didnt look inside it or anything, or check the seals, but I would imagine if its leaking water they would tell me (Theyve known my grandparents, my parents and me since I was born), so they wouldnt try to do me wrong.

I was doing some research and I found someone talking about how the aquarium silicone wouldnt attach to the slate bottom? Any reason this would happen, or was it just an exception?

Old Metaframe stainless tanks that leak can always be fixed for free and no work so if you find one buy it! Place it in a sink and Just put hot water in it. It will soften the tar And overnight it will stop leaking. And will never leak again until you take the water out. But if you store it empty the tar dries out and It will leak again then just give it the hot water treatment. Can do this over and over so leave the tar in it. And old aquarist secret.

I should also mention that I am going to live plant it, but I dont think that will make a difference?
