OMG my mom.

I heard the term yellow eared slider yrs ago vicious but i remember them stating there the same turtle just its a color variation.

And that's why it's good to go by scientifc names. ;)

Yes I know it is lol thats why I refer to my old Jaguar Cichlid as a Parachromis managuense lol. But common names are alot easier to say like with the Jack Dempsey lol. But yeah Yellow Eared And Red Eared are the same turtle.

Vicious is correct - same dang turtle :) Just because someone CALLS it something as a common name, doesn't make it a different turtle. The scientific name is what is important, and a RES is a RES no matter if you want to call it a Yellow or not.

Anapsid was a great site - ten years ago. The articles are older and outdated and a LOT has changed.

If you can't get a large tank, then you definitely can't dig up a pond! It's not like just dig a hole in the ground and fill it with water...

i realize this. you have to get a lining.

and the only reason i cant get a large tank is because our house has a wood foundation rather than cement and a large tank would go through the floor.

get a rubbermaid stock container. i have a 150g one. it works great

A few thoughts:
a pond is a good idea, especially down in TX - you don't have to go super deep for frost line and heave issues, but you will need a substantial amount of water to avoid over heating - I'll look for some specs.

The turtle ID debate:
Over the years the red eared slider (RES) has become known as something akin to 'the cockroach of the turtle world' and so many an enterprising seller will use monikers that are more sale friendly - real or not. In the case of 'Brazellian turtle' it actually isn't that uncommon - you'll find that name used for RES quite a bit in China, even today - here's a current article http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/content/view/17831/ no matter what they are called the issues are the same, easiest, cheapest turtle to produce naturally gets sold the most.

VF hit the nail on the head - got to use the scientific name to really know.
BTW that comma shaped splotch by the 'ear' is always a dead giveaway, doesn't matter if it's yellow, orange, red - faded brown whatever - that size, shape and placement mark it for what it is.

k thanks. im looking at some pond liners. the one were looking at is 6ft by 9ft but the actual liner is 10 by 13. so about how deep is it than?

If you want to keep koi in this pond as well, plan it around them; their space and depth requirements are greater than the turtle's. There are plenty of sites with good info on koi ponds; khoiphen.com is a good one.

A 10 X 13 foot liner will make a 6 X 9 pond about 12-18" deep, but only if you leave practically no excess liner at the edges (which is not a good way to do it). Here's a pond calculator to figure out how much liner you need: http://www.geocheminc.com/pondlinercalc.htm
