I just tested my water, and I discovered my nitrate level was at 160!!! Every time I test the water, I am at 0, but today I got quite a surprise! I have a 40 gallon tank. I did a 25% water change, added bacterial enzyme, what else can I do lower the nitrate? What could have caused the level to go that high? :help:

How long has your tank been set up? Any plants?

You don't want it to be 0 or 160. The only way to lower nitrates is water changes.

My tank has been set up about 2 months....I planted some bulbs, and 2 of them have sprouted a little.

What are your other numbers, like ammonia and nitrites. It may be that you're finished the cycle.

Here are my levels:
Ammonia 0
Nitrate 160
Nitrite 0
Hardness 75
Alkalinity 120
PH 6.8

I don't think my tank is overstocked, but here it goes... I have 2 rainbow sharks, 3 balloon belly mollies, 3 pineapple swordtails, 3 long finned tetras, and 1 african dwarf frog, 1 blue mystery snail, and a little black snail that just showed up last week....what do you think?

I just tested it again, and now it's down to 80. I use Jungle brand 5 tests in 1 quick dip strips. should I change the water again tomorrow?
