I was SOOOOO mad at my son!!! He went to the bay with a friend to fish.....I said I don't want to hear about it, but if he catches anything he has to let it go. Well he brought home a huge fish in a bag and said that it died by accident or what ever...like I said I don't like hearing about killing fish. I know I am wierd, but I get really sad.
Anyway, bag was there and I didn't want to look, but he kept saying how cool it was, and tricked me into seeing it. OMG it was SOOOO cute!!! I had to hold back the tears!!
I guess it was a five pound dog fish. It had the hugest cutest eyes!! Now I have to find out how I can set up a tank for one and where I can get one!!
We live in the puget sound, so our water is pretty cold. Does anyone have one??

Also does anyone know anything about flounders?? I have them on my order list and I have always wanted one and I don't remember why I haven't got one yet.lol I think they are adorable!! When I put dogs and flounders in my search engine I always end up with the ones in the ocean still. Not much about aquarium care.

Thanks

The problem with dog fish is that they are of course from the shark family and need a huge swimming space. Probably far too big for anything in a persons home. A 5 pound fish is pretty large and they get much bigger than that.

Have fun. After setting up the several hundred gallon tank, you'll have to get a chiller-I hear they can cost several hundred dollars. But thats just a fraction of what you have to spend. You'll have less heartache with a tropical tank.

Not to mention whatever you do dont put you hand in the tank when your cleaning it.

I live on Van Isle so ill presume its the same spieces that lives up here. It will get way to big for a normal tank, They can can get up to 4 feet long. There a shark so they need lots of swimming room. You whould need a chiller since it whould need a cold water enviorment. A really good exspensive one to handel the huge size that tank whould need to be. Then theres fedding the thing which whould cost a fair amount once it go to a decent size.

I'm not goint tell you what to do, But unless you plan on dropping, LIke 20k to house this 1 fish its not very practical.

dogfish? They reek badly of ammonia if you cut it open.

Those things are annoying. Everything I go fishing over in Edmonds I snag a couple of dogfishes, most people dont even bother throwing them back into the water cause they'll come back and bite the line again. Same goes for the ratfish another digusting creature of the sea.

flounder

flounders are really neat.. you can net them off the docks of an inlet river...
just go away from the coast in slightly salty water and throw a cast net..
they are running this time of year and easy to get..

slowly drip to adjust salinity.. they are really tough and don't seem to outgrow the tanks if you put them in as a small fish... I started mine at about an inch.. he is about an inch and a half after 6 months ....
he is the funniest thing in my tank !!!

If a fish is supposed to get larger and doesn't because he is being kept in a smaller tank that means the fish is stunted, its internal organs are growing poorly and they will eventually die. Their life span will be cut very short, usually due to organ failure. A goldfish will also stay small if kept in a bowl but in no way can live to the full life span of 25 years that way.

You shouldn't get a fish that you can't take care of when it is a full sized adult.

TKOS... I do agree.. I do not keep tangs becuase of that... I have a tank that is 3 foot long and the flounder was about an inch 6 months ago.. I didn't say it wouldn't grow.. but I do think maybe it slows.. hell maybe the flounders aren't fast growers at first.. I dunno...
my point is that if you are intrested in them.. instead of paying the fish store 20 or 30 bucks for one and doing the same thing... why not catch your own..
these are a low demand fish that are more then plentiful in most areas..
I have had my fish for around 6 months and love it...
he seems very happy.. he is active and eats well...

he stirs the sand bed by burrowing slightly and flapping around it kicks up sand he camoflauges in and hovers around.. very very neat..

wrong possibly (some could say that about every aspect of our hobby... I'm not fighting that fight).. maybe find the right flounder for your needs.. there are over 80 species of Flounder native to the eastern coast... the ones I get are small...

Well the choices you make are of course your own and hopefully we all do the reseacrh necessary to ensure our fish are healthy. But catching your own isn't always an option. In many parts fo the country (Canada included) it is illegal to catch your own pets, even a non protected fish species. I know in Canada it would be highly illegal to catch a fish that is part of the fishery. So always check local laws.
