OMG!! STOP IT, now I'm gonna be scared...I do have a basement, but not on that part of the house, it is just a partial basement!!

Well there was a chant that they beat into our brains in basic training back in the 80's. But unfortunately it is a family site and I can't quote it.. But lets just say it would be an affirmative to Niko's post.
The Betta is cursed and must be removed from the house.
Then you need a Priest to come in and bless the house.
Just to be sure I would scrape some possum roadkills off the road and look for their gallbladders and hang one over each doorway and window,this will drive out any spirits and curses and keep them out. You might need to add fresh GBs every few months to make sure the curse stays away. I've heard of times where they sit outside and when the GB runs out they just re-enter. These are the people who just think they have bad luck lives.
So if I have this figured right for a $5 Betta you've spent pretty close to $900 and ended up getting a smaller tank. Only 30 gallons smaller but it was the extra width you were going for.
