So we had this 150 gallon tank with stand at work and this loaded guy buys it. Well the bottom of it cracks and spills water all over his floor and he brings it back. The store by policy isn't allowed to mark it down and resell it SO I have the oppurtunity to take it home FREE. Stand and all! I just have to repair the bottom of the tank. With that said, there is a crack along the bottom glass all the way accross. Before I take this monster home, what would I need to do to adequately repair that and ensure it dosn't break again?

I was thinking of adding a really thick layer of glass to the interior over the top and using aquarium sealant to fuse it in place. Do you think that'd work?

I would disasemble the tank and rebuild it with new glass... that is a big enough tank that I wouldn't want it unzipping in my house.

and make sure the stand, tank and floor is level and able to support the wieght so it doesn't happen again

but that is just me and not trusting a patched tank of that size, a full bottom patch could work and be fine...

well it was filled up with rocks as a large cichilid tank and the stand was fine so I'm assuming that's not the problem. The bottom layer of glass was the only thing that gave way via a crack.

I have layered glass on an end as you suggest. My 50g has been like that for 20 years. You will need to seal aroung the edge as it's hard to get 100% seal in the layer IMO. That said as long as it's on a well supported surface you could likely just silicone over the crack on the inside and use it as is. Just take care with the substrate as it goes in. I've done that as well... My 16g has a side that has been reinforced but some parts are just sealed with silicone only. It depends on how brave you are... :)

NICE!! Lucky you!

If it was me, I'd tear it down and put a new tempered piece in. Prolly cost $100. You got a lot of tank and stand for nothing so.......

If I was to fix, it I'd use the methods described above. Either way it'll be a bit of a pain.

Just wondering what kind of tank it was? Usually a big gal tank like that has a tempered glass bottom and saying it "cracked" would be a bit of an understatement. ;)

If it's tempered glass, then it could be costly. The labour alone, could end up making you just buy a new tank. There's no way to fix the tank without replacing the whole section of glass, even then I would trust 2800 lbs of water pressing up against it in my living room. Despite the money you're saving, imagine the cost of the damage it does to your house.

i had a similar thing happen to a 30g tank i had

i quite simply cut off the bottom sheet of glass with razor blades

then removed all the remaining silicon. while i was doing that, i had a pice of glass cut to sise. i took the oppertunity to get thicker tougher glass to it wouldn't happen again.

then i sealed it all with aquarium silicon, all pretty easy to do, just a bit time consuming. but since you got it for free, go for it

Its not 2800 pounds of water. More like 1700 or in that neighborhood. I showed it to the Home Depot(luckily it's right next to where I work) And they think if I used this liquid welding stuff they have, on the bottom, and silicone the top that it'd hold up fine. Whatever I do I'm prolly adding some extra wooden braces inside the stand underneath it.
