Once upon a time there was a Second Floor room, One Joist, and 40 Gallon Fish Tank...

In my first apartment I put a 30 gal on top of a dresser full of clothes. I had no idea how the floor was running.
I know it all makes a difference on the lay of the floor and probably the quality of the floor, but really if you have a recliner with a 200 lb person in it, how is that any different? The tank will not be moving either.
I dont think it would be a problem. but that is just my opinion.

If I lived in a place where I worried that 4.5 sq. feet of floor couldn't support 400 pounds I'd move. I wouldn't wait either… I'd get out now.

:dive2:

haha carpguy.. i was just thinking that myself. my aunt is pretty big, id say around 400ish pounds.. can you imagine if she came over, and boom!! thru the floor she goes? i think id be horrified at first, then crack up laughin.. i dont like her much anyways! not even to sure if id be concerned more about her, or my floor.... hmm, yah my floor =)

Let us not forget when making comparisons with people, that tanks are stationary and permanently placed in their positions.

That is to say, if you have a 400 lb aunt, she might sit in a chair for a few hours, go over here, over there etc. But she is not going to stand in one place for days, months, or years. An aquarium will do that.

But, from what I have gathered it should be safe to keep a 40 gallon tank upstairs. I made similar thread a month or so ago regarding my 55g on a second floor. Everyone said it would be okay, and so far it has.
