I picked up two pictus catfish yesterday when i added them to my tanl i noticed that one had only one eye. It looks like it may have been born that way because it is an eye spot but no eye. I was wondering if there are any ill effects of only having one eye? And if the little one is going to live and prosper as if it had both eyes? it seems to be ok and healthy but I would like an opinion on this please?

i think it should be just fine. as long as it gets enough to eat and isn't being bullied by other fish, it can even thrive. it won't bump into things because its lateral line will detect objects in the water and movements around it.

i had a friend who said a fish of hers had both its eyeballs eaten out by other fish (wild caught) and it still lived for a few years and ate well! that sounds a lot worse than your situation, though, since the fish looked healthy enough for you to buy it AND not notice it was missing an eye until it got home.

i' pretty sure he won't have any problems, especially since it's a catfish and they're not very visual anyway. they use their barbels and other taste organs (located all over their body!) to detect food. i think you're golden :)

of course, please pose any questions to this forum if you think he's having any trouble in the future.

Sweet thanks I use this forumand others but mostly this one when I have questions and it has been a helpful tool to me thanks for your input. He may turn out to be one of my favorites. Actually he is the most spotted one I have that is why I got him. you know last thing I was looking for was if he had two eyes and I bought two at the same time so I did not even notice. Thanks

glad to be of help. that one probably will be your "special fish" and your favorite. i also have a special fish who is an albino golden dojo loach, but has freckles and a swimbladder disorder. he's not permanently crippled, he eats fine, but has a little trouble staying at the bottom of the tank. he's my little retarded guy, definitely my favorite because he's imperfect :)

hey, you could name your one-eyed cat "Pirate" or "Cyclops" something.
