One fish dying after another!!! HELP!!!

Hi- being new to fishkeeping myself, I understand how upsetting it is when there's something wrong with the tank and you just can't figure it out, or know what to do to stop it. I had a German Blue Ram who I just loved get sick and die a few weeks ago, seemingly out of nowhere. All my water conditions were perfect, I still don't know what happened. Anyway....back to your problem.....

Without diagnosing the disease/parasite/fungus, I don't know if there's anything you CAN do aside from keep your fingers crossed...

Do you have a local fish store? If you have a dead fish that you haven't thrown away or flushed, I'd bring it in to the aquarium store along with a water sample and ask them what it is. They'll tell you how to medicate......

How long are you going to London for? It's very nice of your friend to take care of your fish, but you should make sure that she has as much information on exactly what to do as possible. Also, it's very easy for fish to get overfed by well-intentioned, over-anxious sitters. Whenever I go away, I pre-measure daily rations for my fish and put them in pill-boxes (the kind that has each day of the week separated into its own compartment- I got them at CVS). That way, all the sitter has to do is pop the box and dump it in.

You may have already done this, but I think you should leave her with a full list of what fish you have and ask her to count them every day (this is particularly important since you've been losing fish). It's very bad for the the other fish to have dead fish rotting in the tank......she needs to know to look for them if they're not swimming around and to fish them out if she finds them.

One last thing.....Depending on how long you're going away for and how invested you want to be in this problem....perhaps tomorrow morning you might want to pick up an inexpensive 10 gallon tank and filter to create a hospital tank......you can put the fish you currently have in the vase in there and if another fish looks suspicious while you're away, your friend will be able to separate him from the rest.

Good Luck! Let us know what happens.

Thank you, WG. I will leave my sitter a list of the fish I have. That's a very good idea.

So far none of my fish have died overnight. It seems that 2 of them are behaving suspiciously however, just being lethargic. At this point I'm hoping I'm being overly paranoid and I'm imagining it. The platy I put in the vase is doing ok (considering) but he's not eating, which is hard to picture for a platy (they're such chow hounds). I will leave him in there while I'm at work today and see how he's doing when I get home.

OH...MY...GOD...

That platy I isolated just had a whole bunch of babies. (Still doesn't explain "HER" funny scales on the sides though.) NOW what do I do about that??????? Take her out of isolation? Put the babies in the tank?

Crap, I need an answer quick, I have to leave for work!!! HELP!!!

Ok, so now I have at least 17 or 18 baby platies in the vase with the mother. I don't know if the babies can stay in a vase with an air bubbler all day, and I have to leave for work, so I'm going to put them in the tank with my other fish. There's tons of little hiding places so hopefully they'll be ok.

I don't know what else to do, and I'm late for work now, so I have to make a decision right now.

Well, the platy that had the babies this morning is dead. One of the 2 remaining cories looks like crap now, I think he's next.

So it was:
1 betta
2 neons
1 cory
1 platy
and another cory that looks like he's on his way out.

Tomorrow night I'm leaving for London. Maybe by the time I get back on Sunday there will be nothing left.

All i say is if a Cory died something is wrong . Cory has to be the most durable and can survive cycles no problem. At least when I cycle a tank I had a cory in and it was like he never knew the tank was in cycle.

My whole tank is dying: update

Before I give another update, I just want to say how disappointed I am in the lack of replies I've gotten. I've always gotten lots of help in the past, but this go-around I couldn't even get anyone to tell me if I should isolate any of my fish or not. My whole tank is dying. And the only replies I got to this thread were people asking me questions, all of which I answered (yes I know I made mistakes), and I got no suggestions. I will look for a new fish forum starting today.

So, one of my 2 remaining catfish was dead when I woke up this morning. Now I am down to one.

I don't know how my fish tank can recover from this. I don't know if I should have done a huge water change. I don't know if I was supposed to quarantine any suspicious looking fish, and if I was, how would I have done that without an extra tank. I don't know if I should have bought something from a store.

Soon I will have no fish left, and there's nothing I can do about it but sit back and let it happen. It's too late now, because I'm going to London tonight, and I'll be at work all day. All I wanted was for someone to tell me what to do.

It seemed to me that from the answers you gave to the questions that were asked there was not much more you could have done. It seemed most likely that the fish deaths were a result of stress. My advice would be to not keep so many fish in such a small aquarium in the future. I would advise you to look in to getting a 29 gallon or larger and keeping the 12 gallon as a quarantine tank.

Thank you, H3D. No, I will never put that amount of fish in my tank again, no matter how temporary it is.

Unfortunately, one of my other platies appears to be showing signs that it's going down the tubes. All the fish that are dying are showing the same symptoms - it looks like their scales are being erroded or worn off, which gives that spot a cloudy-like appearance. They also may or may not be showing redness on their bodies, particularly in their gills, but that might just be my imagination.

I know I should never have put those neons in there, but how could they have done that much damage to my tank in such a short amount of time? Even if they threw the tank into another cycle, wouldn't the tank be recovering from the ill effects of it by now, especially since I have less than 1/3 of the fish population I did before?

Should I do a huge water change tonight before I leave for London?
