A betta is fine in a 1gal. tank. I had one in there for years and he was just fine. In fact, I had him in a 10 gal and all he did was try to fight so I moved him to the one gal. and he was fine. The puddle thing is because rice patties are not full of water year round. They do dry up. My betta tank was never filtered and had the water changed only as necessary. Point being, a 1gal. is fine for a betta no question about it.

I would never keep my betta in a 1g. Thats just mean. It would barely have anywhere to swim. If your going to buy an animal you should give it a good home. It is more then just something to look at, it is a living thing that is just as capable as feeling as a dog or cat. It deserves a home it can thrive in not just survive.

I have 2 bettas one is in a 5g he got really big for a betta and just would not be happy in a 2g. I have a smaller betta in a 2g. Both tanks have a ugf and a whisper 3i and each has a heater. If you compare them to scale it appears the betta in the 2g has just as much room as the betta in the 5g.

The other side of that reasoning uf is that the betta SURVIVED living in a one gallon environment that you put him in & that he couldn't escape when the rains came ,...for years b/c he breathed air.

You are right about the puddle thing & that holds true with any and all fish who are not mobile enough to move when the environment (pond , lake stream,...etc..) that they are in dries up. The ones that can move do, the ones that can't die, some of the ones that breath air "SURVIVE".

Is it good that they do that? How long do they live? A week? A couple days? How can you justify keeping a betta in something equivalent to you living in a bathroom with no toilet for the rest of his life? He'll live 2-3 years max in a bowl, but is likely to live 5-7 years in a well-maintained 10g

What about one of those little aquariums that they sell at like petco? They have filters and pumps included and are really cute. They come in different sizes and arent hard to clean or maintain

I kept a betta for over a year in a 2.5g tank with no filter and heater, with just sand, slate slabs, and a few sicks of bamboo. He always had a bubble nest, besides when I came along and destroyed while doing a WC.

Later, I moved him, by himself, to a 10g with live plants, a large rock with caves, and filter and heater. He never once tried to make a bubble nest, and would usually just hang out in the plants. I think he lasted about 4 or 5 mo. before passing away in that tank.

Now I keep two bettas in two of those .5g globe tanks, with a small fake plant, and they always have nests.

I would say keep a single betta, and some Anubias Nanas, which could survive in a photograher's dark room. Or get a desk lamp with a spiral PC 6700K bulb and keep it 8" above the tank.

The word "fine" and "survive" are often tossed around by people when talking about keeping bettas in bowls.

A human being can "survive" for many years in a 6" x 12" prison cell, but that doesn't mean he's healthy or happy.

not going waste my time with THAT argument again, it happens atleast once a week.

so im jsut going to say that i think you could easily keep a betta in there.

And i'm sure it would be so happy too. My friend has a betta in a 1 gallon and it just floats all day. I have a Betta in a 5 gallon, another friend and my boyfriend have 10 gallons for each of their bettas and all of our fish are very active.Way more active than I ever though bettas could be because I had never seen them in dedicated tanks larger than 1 or 2 gallons.
