i would like to put a firemouth and a salvini into a 55 gal. tank with about 12 odessa barbs, and i would like to know what you think about this, and if there are any other fish that could go into this tank, all your insite is great

With 12 Barbs you are only going to get away with either the FM or the Salvini. Either would probabaly work fairly well as long as the barbs are bigger.
Yes, they can work together.
I'd keep a male Firemouth with a female Salvini. I see no problems with the barbs other than the possibility of being slowly killed off by the cichlids. Giant Danios would be a better choice...Though, the Odessa Barbs do look a lot better.
