One side of face on acei looking white ear eye and mouth.

Well. acei didnt make it through the night. I did put some ammo lock in last night to help lower my amonia level. This morning the rest of my fish are looking very lively and aggressive today. One of my rustys is showing some purple banding that hasnt been there for a while; lately just brown. So maybe ammonia is my biggest issue, possibly relating to my filtration which is just barely enough at best for this tank. I'll need to upgrade my filtration either way. Tank is 55g; Power filter is rated at for a 60g.
I realize i must get a premium test kit soon; so i will do so very soon. Having my water tested elsewere once in a while is not enough. I just have ammonia test strips right now.

durn it.

I would say it is the ammonia, so you need the test kit and some Prime or similar.

Yes you also need another filter - standard practice is double the filtration per filter rating for malawis.

If you can I would sugest that you increase aeration in your tank in order to reduce the BOD. This includes any ammonia/ammonium that is available. It will also lower your fish stress levels and allow them to better cope while you slowly adjust your water parameters.

thanks. Yea i have extra air being pumped in thru an air stone. I have an extra whisper 20 laying around which can be used along with the whisper 60. Would that help for now intill i can invest in better one after income tax?

That should be eough. Just make sure that the surface is turned over frequently. Thats where most gas exchange takes place.
