My onion plant is very tall, so I was wondering if it would be ok if I just trimmed the leaves down a little?

You can prune back any leaves which get too long (remove from the bottom rather than cutting at the top).

I have trimmed back the leaves on my onion plant lots. I just cut them wherever I want. the only problem is that about 2 inches of the plant below where I cut also dies.
