I came across Onion plants as a suggestion to plant in the aquarium. Is there a special kind of onion plant? or can you pick up any onion plant and stick them in there?

The onions you eat (Allium spp.) are not the same ones that you would grow in your tank. The ones you want are Crinum spp.

A few of the ones available in the hobby are:
C. thaianum
C. natans
C. calamistratum

There is also one called "dwarf water onion" (Zephranthes candida) but it is a bog plant.
