We are starting a Koi club here in the Toronto area. The first meeting will be "informal" and held Sunday June 15, 2003. If you are interested please email me and I will forward you the details. Even if you aren't sure a Koi club is for you, everyone is more than welcome to attend.

What do you do with your fish in the winter?? A lot of my fish seem to disappear during their time outside, do you have this problem as well?

yashinfan, explain a bit about your current pond set up(gallons/depth/how many fish/etc) and we may be able to give you some better ideas as to how to get your fish through the winter. Well I started with 22 fish this year and now I approximate that I have 16 left. It's probably less than a foot deep but I think it is about 6 feet long and 4 feet wide. There are many hiding places (ie-under waterfall rocks, rocks, floating plants, in pots, etc..) but I suppose it would not be deep enough for them to borough or survive the winter. Now that I see your pictures it is a huge difference between our ponds :) I'm very jealous!

yashinfan, sorry but that pond is just to shallow to over-winter fish, as you already know. I'm going to average a guess that the pond is maybe between 80 to 180gallons. I've been to Ottawa in the winter.. that pond is going to be solid ice no matter what you try:D Start thinking of building an indoor set-up for over-wintering those fish if you want to keep them - and I encourage you to "cull"/re-home quite a number of them as well - that's a lot of fish! Pick your favourite 4 to 6 fish and give the rest away or trade in at your LFS for credit.
