A friend brought us an Opaline Gourami for the future community tank, but the tank is not completely ready yet. We put the Gourami temporarily into the Goldfish tank, and he was agressive towards the Goldfish, tearing the fins and even some scales. I had to remove him and put him into a smaller tank with just a sponge filter in it. Since Gourami breathes the same as Betta will he be okay in this tank until the big tank is ready? Are Blue and Opaline Gouramis too agresive for a semi-agressive community tank?

i've found Opalines should only be with other Gouramis. They tend to be territorial. Something like a dwarf blue gourami would work well in a community tank.

I have 2 opaline gouramis in a 20 gal. long community with 2 cory cats, 4 yo yo loaches, and a female betta. They can be quite aggressive, but only show it toward each other. They fight constantly but don't hurt each other, and and has 1 side of the tank. I also have a golden gourami which has had to be moved from at least 3 tanks because he would have killed my other fish. I guess it just boils down to each has its own personality, and some are much more aggressive than others.

In my experience, gouramis and bettas have varying temperments... Some can tolerate being with other fish, and others can't.

My blue paradise (Macropodus Opercularis) are fun, personable fish. They're curious, mischevious, and energetic, but won't tolerate any non gouramis in there, or even smaller gouramis.

I don't have firsthand experience, but maybe someone will back me up- smaller gouramis (trichopsis pumilus or colisa lalia) may be better suited, perhaps?
