Open Floor Tank ???

Similar yea... wow that was gorgeous... I am in aww at that beautiful set up... I mean truly in aww... any ideas on where to get something like that?

Shawn

My guess it’s a custom job. I can’t find any floor display tanks/ponds for pet stores that aren’t custom made. But I’ll keep an eye out…

Glass Cages is the only place I can think of that carries a 310g square aquarium. After them I have seen several acrylic aquarium manufacturers that can make both square and cylindrical aquariums. Pretty much over 30" diameter or so becomes a special order though.

I've seen some gorgeous set-ups at Petco - one of them is salt-water - absolutely amazing. They do have dividers though. I would contact Petco. If they don't sell them they might tell you where they get them.

I wonder how hard it'd really be to create something like that. I imagine the best thing would be to build a metal or water-sealed wood frame to surround and support the structure and then you'd have to buy a thick bottom plate (which you could probably get cheaper by buying a less desireable type of glass or plexi, since it'll be covered in substrate anyways). Then, you'd have to set custom-cut pieces of plass or plexi with a good silicone aquarium-safe sealant.

Depending on how big you wanted it to be... I bet making it yourself would be cheaper than trying to have someone else do it. But I like DIY projects. I'd probably love to experiment with creating something like this myself if there was a market for it around here... : /

It'd be lovely to make something like that box-shaped, polished wood above-ground pond that one guy listed... only with viewing panes cut out on the sides, don't you think?

The biggest challenge would be the stand. Making something that large and that wide to be able to support the broad bottom of such a big tank!! I imagine you'd almost have to make one big, or several small, concrete pedistles for it to sit on....

Heh heh... sorry. I think too much. ^_^;;

Shame they don't make them bigger than this... that'd be a good start!!

You could just make a stand and have the glass top trimmed down, or you could just use it as a table!!

Here's a different style...

I love those aquarium coffee tables but I couldnt keep that glasstop clean and pretty I am sure.

Glasscages.com can custom make just about anything. At any good LFS with some large 'floor' display tanks they are usually all custom made. I asked the local store here (aquarium adventure) about some of there large open top tanks that sit pretty well on the floor and are designed for viewing from above (although they are all glass sides too) with a waterfall or something behind them, and they said they were all custom made, although they would not reccomend that company for anything, they had lots of problems with them. If your not going to do the plywood/pondliner thing then its going to cost alot, like 4 digit numbers for anything over 300g thats wider than 2 foot I would guess. Or about $100-200 for DIY (just a guess, my prices for EPDM might be out of date).

The only problem with the one you found is that I only see it available in the UK. I haven't seen any listings for THAT aquarium table in the US... of have you found some? O.o

..... I stand corrected. :p

Any short wide tank could be used as a coffee table tank, just get the top for it. You could do a corner unit like that one has just by sectioning off a corner with glass or acrylic. Or put some kinda overflow chamber in it if there is enough room for a filter underneath (or just run plumbing though the floor even). Glasscages sells coffee table tanks and round or square tops for them.
