Got five tiger barbs a week ago Saturday for our established tank that was empty for three days after we gave away our danios and guppies. They seemed to acclimate well and moved around a lot for the first few hours of being in the tank; however, they would not eat. Well, ever since later on that day they were very inactive and wouldn't eat when fed (bloodworms and fish flakes were tried). They would just maintain position in certain parts of the tank at all times.
The tank was cycled, we did a partial water change (probably 20% in a 10g), and then added three small harlequins at the suggestion of a friend to see how they would do and see if they would prompt the barbs into action. The barbs maintained inactive status, but the harlequins have been fine.
This past Saturday, three of the tiger barbs had died and another died on Sunday. I won't be surprised if the last one's dead by the time I get home this morning. Saturday we also noticed this brownish algae growing on the sides of the tank. We've never had algae of any kind before in our tank because we have some snails that keep things pretty clean along with our water changes.
I'm really at a loss as to why the barbs wouldn't eat, were inactive, and died. Our tank was full cycled and the other fish have done fine. I guess it's possible that they were in bad condition from the pet store since they started acting funny pretty soon after being in our tank.
