I am finally getting my 75 gallon set up and I am ready to purchase a water pump for the wet/dry filter. The problem I am having is deciding between 2 pumps; Danner Supreme Mag 7 and the Quiet One 3000.

From my research both appear to be well made with good warranties. The Quiet One 3000 is more energy efficient and perhaps quieter, but doesn't pump as much water as the Danner at comparable head heights. How much of a turnover rate should I be aiming for? At a 5 foot height the danner pumps a little over 8 GPM while the Quiet One looks like it pumps about 6 to 7 GPM. Whichever pump I finally get will be used inside the sump.

Thank you for any opinions,
Mike

In the very same situation I chose the Quiet One 3000, for a discus tank and a bit slower flow will be a good thing, plus the tank is in public areas so noise will be an issue.

Other wise, I'd have chosen the Mag 7, and just inserted a valve to choke it back in necessary.

Unfortunately, I have not set this up yet, so I can't tell you if the 3000 was correct!

not one of the pumps you have in mind but my sedra has been running since 2000 nonstop and still works great and they are quiet.
the 2 you are thinking about are both good pumps and i myself would probably just get the cheaper one.

i don't have a quiet one 3000 but i do have a quiet one 4000 and a 2000 and they are the worst pumps i have ever used. they are extremely loud and vibrate a large amount. i used them for ~2 weeks submersed and had to scrap them now they are relegated to mixing new water if i have to do a large water change. ithe 4000 was actually shaking the tank/stand and i could here the vibrations/noise on first floor of my home  , tank is on 2nd floor. the 2000 cause just as many vibrations and was just as loud if not louder than the 4000 and i could not get the threaded adapter with o-ring on correctly (all three tabs to lock in place) no matter how hard i tried. restricting the out flow on the 200 was the only way i found to quiet it down and even that didn't help. the mold job on some of the the plastic parts is also sub-par.

i have a pump (like a large powerhead) out of one of those small pool filters (intex i think) that i would even use over the q.o.

do you need a submersible pump? or and external?

Now I am second quessing getting the Quiet One pump. Their ads say the noise level is "only 45 decibels", but if you are getting the kind of noise/vibration you describe I won't get one. I would like to use the pump in a submersible setting. I could drill out and put a bulkhead on the sump to use an external pump, but I don't really want to.

How long have you had your pumps? I tried double checking where I saw it, but I thought I saw somewhere where the pumps were redesigned to improve noise/vibration, now I can't find it.

Am I correct in saying that the Rainbow Aquatics originally manufactured these pumps and that Pentair took them over?

i might have been a little harsh in my first post. i was kinda tired when i posted. the 4000 wasn't near as noisy as the 2000 (i am sure the 2000 i have is defective its just too loud not to be) i think in a sump the noise and vibrations wouldn't be as big a deal as in a main tank. just find a good way to suction/mount it in the tank. the 4000 i got had rubber feet but no suction cups so i had to use the cups from an old powerhead, i have no idea if the 3000 is supposed to come with suction cups or not. i can't really compare it to a mag drive though cause i haven't used any of them yet.

i think i may just be biased cause i'm used to the cs velocity pump on my 120g wich is REAL quiet. only problem with it is the heat it puts into the water and its cost.

hopefuly others will chime in about there experiences

Well, I have decided to go with the Quiet One 3000. As much as I would like to go with the Mag Drive 7, I can get a good price on the 3000 and the cost to run it is cheaper (albeit not much)

Even though a tech at one of the big mail order shops had the following to say; I would go with the Mag drive #7 myself. The new Quiet ones are not nearly as quiet as the old model. They are however much cooler running, and can be used submersibly. The Mag drive is a very durable and reliable pump and pretty much an industry mainstay and I use them all the time myself and have been very happy with their performance., I am still going with the 3000.

It will be probably 3 weeks until I get the tank set up and the fish transferred, but when I do I will Post whether or not my decision was a good one.

follow up on Quiet One 3000 choice

Well, it took me longer than expected to get my 75 gallon up and running. Finally finished the hood, ran an electrical outlet to the tank, and started the cycling process yesterday. This has all been an interesting learning process, especially in setting up my first wet/dry filter.

As my last post stated, I went with a Quiet One 3000 pump and while it is too early to give a good assessment of my choice I can say it sure does pump the water and I am thinking perhaps it is too much of a pump. I have an outside overflow box with, I am hoping to soon be, a nice quiet Stockman standpipe. I am still working on the quiet part and will probably post a question as to other's experiences in tweaking this setup.....Anyway the overflow has a 1" bulkhead and 1.25" flex hose. The return line is 1.125" bilge pump hosing going to 1" pvc with a ball valve near the top of the tank. I am not sure if the valve placement is good or bad for the pump, but I am glad I put it in because I have to throttle the flow back so the pump doesn't dry out the sump. I am pumping it up 4.5' with 2 90's. Looking at the charts the pump must be putting out between 450 to 550 gpm.

There is a hum coming from the pump, but because I have no experience with other brands, I can't say if it is noisy or quiet compare to others. I will say, though, that if this tank was set up in my in my bedroom it would be too noisy.

You've already made your choice, so this isn't directed at you necessarily, but all the Mag pumps I own are also submersible. I don't own any Quiet One pumps, so I can't compare, but the Mags are nice pumps that can be used inline or submersed.
