Oranda Fin Color changed.

Almost all of my fish are from Ken at Goldfish Connection/Dandy Orandas. Black is most stable in telescopes as they are the breed in which it has been the longest established, but regardless of the size of the fish when you buy it, they're no guarantees it will stay black throughout it's life. Like I said before, color enhancing foods are very bad for maintaining black, as is spirulina. If you want a fish with a better chance of staying black, look at the belly. Apparently fish with a silverish sheen are more likely to hold their black longer than one with a red/orange sheen to the belly. Again, hard water and very strong sunlight also can help.

:iagree: Those are good points that I didn't think to mention!

There's still a great debate over what influences color change and development in fish, but lots of UV light (natural UV, from the sun, not from artificial lights!) does seem to intensify and "fix" some colors. Be careful with white fish, though, because exposure to too much sunlight for white fish can cause skin cancer just as it does in humans. This is more common in koi than goldfish but can still happen.
