Every time we go to the LFS my wife nags me about getting her some Orandas - she has been in love with them since she first saw them. Well tonight the LFS had some new ones in - they were chocolates very cool looking, anyway she was like I have to have him - LOL.

Well we already have 3 comets - 1 orange 2 r/w sarasa - would they do ok with Orandas? I dont know anything about Orandas - I told her I thought some fancy goldfish were better suited to tropical water conditions, but I think the Oranda will do ok in coldwater - wont it?

Any Oranda keepers in the house?

orandas are coldwater. if the goldfish you have are a lot bigger than the oranda they may pick on him though. goldfish can be pretty mean at times. if you only have the 3 comets in the 56g then an oranda will fit in there too. I wouldn't really add anymore than 1 more goldfish to the tank, that way they have enough room when they are full grown.

Your 56g is OS if you have 3 comets in there, they can 14"+... anyway, if the fancies are smaller, they will deffinetly have a hard time getting enough food, since the can't move as fast as a comet.
for your 56g you could get a couple of fancies, but not with the comets... you should set up a small pond for them.. then use the 56 for fancies.. well it gives you an excuse for another body of water :D

i have fancies in my 50... i used to have a small comet in there but i took him back to the shop cos he was always attacking my fancies and im sure he was the reason for one of them dying...  ive seen chocolate orandas before and they are very rare in the uk!!!!

:(:(:( ive been looking all over for one!!!!! i think i chose the wrong country to be born in... lol

I'm going to disagree with previous posts and say that your comets will be fine with your orandas. As far as temperature, while fancy goldfish are happy at slightly warmer temps, they are still coldwater fish. I let my tank fall down to about 68 degrees in the winter (or however cold my house gets), and in the summer I'll drop ice bottles in if it gets above 78 degrees (again, my house gets warm.) Fancy goldfish probably would die if you tried to overwinter them in a pond, but can still thrive at coldwater tank temperatures.

IME, the best way to ensure that everyone gets food is to provide a good mix of goldfish floating and sinking pellets during feeding times. Watch out however for swim bladder disease with floating food - if there's one or two fish that continually gulp at the surface for food, you might want to switch to just sinking pellets. You should probably also supplement with zucchine, lettuce, peas, and other natural green vegetables.

As for your tank size, I'm not sure how large your comets are now, but eventually you are going to need to upgrade. I wouldn't recommend anything less than 125g for your final tank. Of course, this tank may be years away. I currently have one 9" shubunkin, 2 6" orandas, a 4" moor and a 5" celestial in a 75g and I would be very happy to upgrade, although I'm sure it's still a few months away. The problem with goldfish is that their size is very dependent on their quality of care. If you neglect them, they stay small and stunted, while if you take good care of them they will grow faster than you can believe. With your system that you listed, I believe you'll fall into the second category.

Good luck! Goldfish are great fish :)

Ah, I forgot to mention mixing floating food with sinking, this is what I do since I have a fancy in my pond with comets.. but in such a small tank I think there'd be agression from the comets.

NOTHING is currently overstocked ... LOL, thanks for your concern though. ;)

IF I were to get her some oranda I would be purchasing a 150g tank that we had our eye on and would most likely stock 3 of them.
