Ok so here's the dl, i really like both of the fish, but i like the orandas better, because...well, actually i don't know, but i do. I was thinking about which one i would rather get, and decided i would never get an oranda. Mostly because i think i would have to trim its wen, and i don't think that i could ever do that. So, because of that, i began to favor ryukins over orandas. But then i got to wondering how many people actually end up having to trim their orandas wen? So my question is, if i were to get an oranda (they are extremely easy to come by in my area, unlike ryukins) what are the chances that i would end up having to trim its wen? Is it a "every oranda will have to have its wen trimmed eventually, if they live long enough" kinda thing, or is it like a "only some orandas will have to have their wens trimmed" kinda thing?
Just curious :)

You can usually tell which orandas will have a lot of wen growth even when they are quite small. Most orandas with a good amount of wen growth will run into issues with it covering their eyes at some point. The better care they receive and the older they grow to be, the more likely it is that the wen will cover the eyes. Whether or not you decide to trim it however, is completely up to you. They tend to find food more by smell than sight anyway, so if you're too squeamish to do it you don't have to. I'd have to say I prefer a nice ryukin over an oranda any day though :grinyes:

Sorry I can't answer the trimming question; I just wanted to say ORANDA all the way!!! hahaha.

lol thanks guys, and...well, idk, after pouring through vast amounts of pictures and stories on them both...idk which one i really like best now...i think that i would have to go with a ryukin over an oranda if the ryukin had a long, broad tail, but if it didn't, then i would have to go with oranda haha. and color has a lot to do with which one i would pick! :D
and thanks for the great response Inka4040 :D

Lol. NP Crimson. Glad to spread the goldie love. Word of warning about picking fish for color though, a lot of the more exotic colors are less than stable, so I always suggest picking fish for other qualities first.

good point. also i have read alot about their colors changing on you anyways, which is an even better reason to pick for other qualities, this is an interesting link about it, although a bit on the scientificy side lol http://thegab.org/Articles/ColorChange.html

they are??? i never knew that :( poor oranda immune systems

Orandas hands down, even tough they are more prone to diseases.

Where'd you hear this? There are keeping challenges associated with their high bred nature, but this is true of all fancy goldfish varieties. They are not however, any more or less prone to disease than any of the other varieties.

Ryukin, just because I think they're cuter :P
