I've been working on planning my next tank(s) and came across the "orbit" 24 hour lighting system. It has both daytime lights and "moon" lighting for the dark period.

Has anybody tried this system, and is it worth the $$?

The 36" 2X96W unit I ordered just arrived. I hate to say it but I am not impressed. I have a couple of issues with the light:

The "ultra Quiet" fan is actually not all that quiet...it is substantially louder than most computer fans I have heard. The acrylic splash guard on the housing, helps to form a nice resonating chamber for this annoying fan noise as well. Pulling the guard off eliminates much of the resonance but it is still pretty loud to my ears...and certainly too loud for my ultra quiet living room!

The endcaps look pretty cheesy compared to the nice waterproof caps on the Custom SeaLife 1x96W BriteLite I was hoping to replace. They also seem to be oddly placed and of an odd length. It was pretty challenging to get the bulbs in the holders once connected. In fact, the bulbs were butting up against one end of the housing and the cords from the endcaps are of such an odd length and so stiff that you have to take care to get everything back in the fixture without breaking anything.

The "german made", "parabolic" reflector also appears to be of questionable quality...much flatter and of lighter material than I would have imagined. It also does not run the full length of the fixture leaving a couple inches on each end and about an inch all along the bottom inside the fixture without reflective material. In addition, the bulb holders were of poor quality and easily bent beyond being able to hold a bulb in place. Again, when comparing to the old CSL unit it simply does not appear to be of as good a quality.

If you can live with these issues, this may be the light for you though. It does have some bang for the buck...at least on paper. The 2x96W layout offers up plenty of light and the moonlight feature seems like a neat idea. The unit comes with a separate power cord for each 96W bulb as well as one for the three LED moonlights. Note that the fan is tied into one of the lights so if you only run that light only around midday while no one is around it really may not be much of a bother. Unfortunately, the two switches provided control only the 96W bulbs so unless you put the moonlights on a timer, they are either always on or always off.

The $220 price from the Drs. seems reasonable for this feature set. But, in the end, it just did not measure up to the kind of quality I want...especially in an electrical appliance! So it's going back tomorrow.

I sure wish someone had written this last week....

I've got the exact same unit (2x96) and I absolutely love it. It is beautiful to look at, sturdily built and the fan (IMHO) is not loud at all. The way I look at you need to have that fan anyways, so for me it is a small trade off for a great product. Besides if the noise is too much for you, just trade out the stock fan for a computer fan. The moonlights are a neat if unnecessary feature that allows you to watch your fish when the main lights are out. I can't see where the weight of the reflector has anything to do with anything, and even if they did come all the way down to the edge it would add absolutely nothing to the light output. And as far as the bulb holders go, no problems here. These things were meant to illuminate aquariums not fly to the moon. Current USA upgraded their whole product line a little less than a year ago, perhaps you got an older model. Noise was the biggest complaint at that time.

Wow, old thread!

It's good to see some feedback on this system. My next tank is still in the planning stage - I hope to get it sometime this year. I have been leaning towards the orbit system for lighting, but haven't yet made a final decision and am still sorting through the advantages/disadvantages of different setups. Anyone else have opinions on this product?

I have had the Orbit 20" over my 15 tall planted tank for about 3 months now, and it is definately worth the dollars. The design is very well thought and the unit is quite. Unlike the satellite made by the same company or the aqualight by coralife this is a rounded unit that you have to add a few extra inches clearance over the top of the tank. The fan only runs for the daylight lamp which is a sunpaq 6700/10,000, and if you swap out the atenic bulb the fan does not come on, but I have not had any issues with heat etc. THe unit has three plugs and these are easily dealt with using timers so I do not turn on the atenic slot unless the daylights are on. Probably the only down fall of the entire unit is how the bulbs plug in since there is not a lot of space. It takes a little time for this, but in the end when the light is over the tank it is well worth it. HTH
